Carlos Sainz extends with Williams for several seasons

Carlos Sainz has chosen stability. The Spanish driver has signed a new multi-year contract with Williams, thus confirming his desire to continue his adventure with the British team despite a particularly challenging 2026 F1 season.

This extension also puts an end to the speculations surrounding the future of the four-time Grand Prix winner. The frustration shown by Sainz regarding the car’s performance had fueled questions in recent weeks, but the Spaniard ultimately decided to renew his trust in the project led by James Vowles.

Williams will thus keep its current duo in 2027 since the extension of Alex Albon had already been announced. The two men will therefore compete together for a third consecutive season.

Sainz renews his confidence in Williams

Arriving at Williams from Ferrari, Sainz represented a major signing for a team then engaged in a deep rebuild.

His initial results quickly demonstrated the impact of his arrival. The Spaniard notably secured two podiums in Grand Prix, in Azerbaijan and Qatar, as well as a third place in the Sprint in the United States.

The difficulties faced by Williams with the new regulations in 2026 however slowed this progress and raised some doubts about the driver’s future.

Sainz ultimately chose to commit for the long term.

“I am delighted to announce that my journey with the Williams F1 Team family will continue,” said the Spaniard.

“I sincerely believe in the people who make up this team, both at the factory and on the circuits, as well as in the investments and work done behind the scenes.”

“We have what it takes to turn the situation around”

Rather than looking for an exit after a disappointing first half of the season, Sainz wants to actively participate in Williams’ recovery.

“We have what it takes to turn the situation around together,” he continues. “I am as committed as on day one to help Williams regain its rightful place and I look forward to creating even more memories with the team.”

His new contract would also offer him enhanced guarantees corresponding to his status within the team.

For Williams, this extension is above all an important sign of confidence as the team prepares for its 2027 season, which will mark its 50th anniversary.

James Vowles praises Sainz’s leadership

James Vowles did not hide his satisfaction at being able to continue relying on the experience of the Spanish driver.

“Since his arrival, Carlos’s talent behind the wheel and his involvement at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project,” explained the Williams boss. “He works every day with his engineers to gain every millisecond.”

Beyond his on-track performances, Vowles particularly highlights the role played by Sainz in the team’s development.

“He is a leader of this team and I am delighted that he can see what is possible as we continue our rebuild. It’s not just his race sense and speed that stand out, but also all the work he does behind the scenes in this pursuit of performance.”

Williams secures its duo for 2027

With the new contracts of Sainz and Albon, Williams now has significant visibility on its future.

“Carlos shares the conviction and ambition that we have at Williams and pushes every day to realize them,” adds Vowles.

The Briton even believes he now has one of the best tandems on the grid.

“With Alex, I sincerely think we have one of the strongest duos on the grid and a team capable of fighting together to chase every bit of performance.”

After a 2026 season far from expectations, Williams is therefore betting on continuity to continue its rebuild. And by extending despite the current difficulties, Sainz also sends a clear message: he still believes in the Grove team’s ability to return to the front.
