Despite its position as leader in both championships, Mercedes believes it has not fully exploited its potential in recent weeks. Toto Wolff demands a reaction starting from the Belgian Grand Prix.

On paper, Mercedes is having an excellent 2026 season. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell occupy the top two positions in the drivers’ championship, while the Brackley team holds a comfortable lead in the constructors’ standings.
However, Toto Wolff believes the results could have been even better.
In recent weeks, several incidents have hindered Mercedes’ ambitions. Both Russell and Antonelli have retired this season due to issues related to their power units, while the British Grand Prix once again highlighted the difficulties faced by the team.
At Silverstone, Antonelli started from pole position, but a poor start allowed both Ferraris to overtake him in the first corners. Later in the race, damage to the front left of his car forced him to make a second stop, before a five-second penalty pushed him out of the points.
Russell, on his side, still managed to save a podium despite a slow puncture detected during the race.
Wolff wants flawless execution
A few days before the Belgian Grand Prix, the Mercedes director believes his team must now take a step forward in its execution.
“The last races have shown both our strengths and the areas where we need to improve.”
According to him, the car’s speed is no longer enough if it is not accompanied by impeccable reliability.
“We have a car capable of fighting at the front and scoring many points, but we have not managed to turn this potential into results.”
Mechanical retirements have notably cost a lot in the fight for both titles.
“Reliability issues have made us lose points and, in such a tight championship, we cannot afford that. There’s no point having the pace if we don’t convert it.”

Spa, a new technical challenge
The Spa-Francorchamps circuit will represent a new major test for Mercedes.
Like Silverstone, the Belgian track will heavily involve energy management, an aspect that has become essential with the new power units introduced in 2026.
However, the characteristics of the Ardennes circuit differ significantly from those of Silverstone.
“Spa is one of the biggest challenges on the calendar. Like Silverstone, energy management will play an important role, but the circuit’s characteristics impose different demands.”
Wolff also reminds that the Belgian circuit generally favors overtaking, while remaining particularly demanding during qualifying.
The goal: to go on holiday on a high note
The Belgian Grand Prix will open the last series of two races before the summer break.
For Mercedes, the ambition is to regain perfect execution in order to approach the second half of the season in the best conditions.
“We want to arrive at the summer break on a good momentum. Our goal is to have a clean weekend, achieve the reliability we need, and turn the car’s potential into as many points as possible.”
The Mercedes boss concludes with a straightforward observation.
“We have left too many things on the road in recent weeks. We must make sure this does not happen again starting this weekend.”
While Mercedes remains the benchmark on the grid in 2026, Toto Wolff refuses any relaxation. In a season where every point can make a difference, the German team now intends to systematically convert its potential into victories.
