Christian Horner made his return to the Formula 1 paddock at the British Grand Prix, nearly a year after leaving Red Bull, following a long mandatory notice period.

This was the first appearance of the former team principal at a Grand Prix since his dismissal following the 2025 edition of the Silverstone race.
Horner has been free to work in Formula 1 again since spring, in accordance with the terms of the very important financial agreement made with Red Bull upon his departure. However, the Briton is still waiting to find the right project to make his comeback.
A little-known clause in his agreement with Red Bull
It was already known that Horner could not join another team for a certain period. As often happens in Formula 1 for high-level executives and engineers, he had been placed on “gardening leave”.
But according to Bild, another much less known clause was included in his departure agreement: Horner was simply banned from accessing the Formula 1 paddock until the end of May. Several reports had stated that the former Red Bull director had received around 80 million pounds in compensation, his contract with the team still running for several years.
The reasons why Red Bull wanted to prevent Horner from attending the Grands Prix are unknown. The team may have wanted to avoid his former leader attracting media attention, as was the case during his return to Silverstone. Horner had indeed waited until early 2026 before speaking publicly about his dismissal.

A potentially awkward presence for Mekies
Horner’s regular presence in the paddock could also have been a source of distraction for his successor Laurent Mekies, faced with the difficult task of taking over a team led by the same man for 20 years. Under Mekies’ leadership, Max Verstappen made a spectacular comeback in the 2025 championship, ultimately falling just two points short of Lando Norris.
Horner has since estimated that a new leader generally needs nine to twelve months before having a real influence on his team’s performance. Regarding his future, Christian Horner is regularly linked to Aston Martin, which currently appears to be one of the most credible destinations among the teams already on the grid.
Aston Martin, BYD: what future for Horner ?
Another possibility would be to take the lead of a new project in Formula 1. The Chinese manufacturer BYD has notably been mentioned, although its executives have recently stated that no concrete program is currently planned.
In both cases, Horner would probably not represent an immediate threat to Red Bull. Aston Martin is currently going through a difficult period, while a potential new manufacturer would need several years before being able to compete at the front.
One year after leaving Red Bull, Christian Horner can now move freely in the paddock and prepare his return. The question remains which project will be ambitious enough to convince one of the most successful leaders in the history of Formula 1.
