The Silverstone-based team is going through a particularly complicated start to the 2026 season.
During the Australian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll finished fifteen laps behind the winner, George Russell, while Fernando Alonso, despite having climbed to tenth place on the first lap after a very opportunistic start, eventually retired.
This brief stint in the points was one of the few positive moments of the weekend for the British team.
Tensions with Honda
Faced with concerns about the Honda engine, Adrian Newey tried to calm critics in Melbourne in his role as team principal. It remains to be seen whether his explanations have actually improved relations between Aston Martin and Honda, as the power unit appears to be in difficulty.
Since his departure from Red Bull, Horner has been regularly linked with a return to F1, and many thought Alpine would be his most likely destination. But Toto Wolff’s unexpected interest in buying a minority stake in the French team has changed the situation. The boss of Mercedes could take a stake in Alpine, which would significantly complicate Horner’s arrival at the Enstone team.
According to several reports circulating in the paddock, Horner nevertheless already had funding to acquire a stake in Alpine. But Wolff’s interest could trigger a bidding war that would be disadvantageous for both men.

Towards a Horner-Newey reunion?
In this context, Aston Martin F1 now appears to be the most likely destination for Horner. The team is experiencing a very difficult start to the season and its executive chairman Lawrence Stroll might judge it necessary to strengthen management by bringing in a new partner.
Newey, a legendary figure in F1 design, currently holds an unusual role as team principal, a first in his long career. Having arrived late in the development cycle of the 2026 car, he must manage both the sporting direction and technical challenges, which increases the pressure around the Aston Martin project.
Furthermore, former team principal Andy Cowell has been reassigned to work with Honda on engine problems, a sign that the team’s difficulties are not limited only to the chassis.
In this context, Horner’s arrival could relieve Newey by taking over the operational management of the team. The two men have already worked together successfully at Red Bull and know how to get the best out of each other in periods of high pressure, while their experience with Honda could prove valuable.
It remains to be seen whether Aston Martin will actually choose to reunite Horner and Newey again after the British designer’s departure from Red Bull Racing in 2024 amid a scandal between the English manager and the leaders of Red Bull . But with such a complicated start to the season, the idea is seriously starting to circulate in the paddock.
