One of the men who today finances a Formula 1 team finds himself at the heart of a federal investigation in the United States. While no charges have been brought at this stage, the case is already raising questions far beyond the world of finance.

While rumors circulate about Valterri Bottas’s seat, one of Cadillac F1’s financiers is in the FBI’s crosshairs.
According to Bloomberg, Manhattan federal prosecutors are investigating possible financial irregularities involving two insurance companies controlled by Mark Walter, as well as asset manager Guggenheim Partners, of which he is CEO, and also a sponsor of the Andretti team in Formula E.
A major player in the Cadillac F1 project
Since the takeover of the Andretti project, Los Angeles Dodgers baseball franchise owner Mark Walter has become one of Cadillac F1’s main investors alongside his partner Dan Towriss. Their holding company TWG Global controls TWG Motorsports, the company that holds the majority of Andretti Global in IndyCar and leads the Cadillac Formula 1 program in partnership with General Motors. It is this structure that provides a large part of the American team’s funding.

Let’s be clear: the investigation does not directly concern Cadillac or Formula 1.
Authorities are seeking to determine whether funds from two insurance companies were invested in companies linked to Mark Walter without these links being properly declared to regulators.

According to Bloomberg, actual exposure to these companies reached at least 39% of Delaware Life’s investments, compared to 3% announced until then. The two insurers have received federal grand jury subpoenas and the FBI has also conducted searches as part of its investigations.
No charges
At this stage, Mark Walter is not accused of any wrongdoing and this type of investigation can perfectly well conclude without prosecution.
TWG Global stated that it is “aware of the investigation and fully cooperating with authorities“.
For now, there is no indication that the Cadillac F1 program is concerned. The team is therefore normally continuing its first season in the world championship, even if this affair now places one of its main owners in a particularly embarrassing light.
