A new duel could be brewing behind the scenes of Formula 1. Toto Wolff and Mercedes are reportedly considering taking a stake in Alpine, a move that could directly thwart Christian Horner’s ambitions.

The behind-the-scenes of Formula 1 could soon be the stage for a new face-off between two major figures in the paddock: Toto Wolff and Christian Horner.

According to several reports from the United Kingdom, the Mercedes F1 boss is reportedly studying the possibility of acquiring a stake in the Alpine team. Such a move would immediately place Wolff in direct competition with his former rival.

For several months, Christian Horner has reportedly been interested in a share of the French team’s capital. A 24% minority stake is currently available, held by a consortium of private investors.

This group is notably led by the investment firm Otro Capital and enjoys the support of several well-known figures, including actors Ryan Reynolds and Michael B. Jordan, as well as NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The manufacturer Renault remains the main shareholder with 76% of the shares.

Horner seeks a return to F1

For Christian Horner, this case represents a significant opportunity to return to the paddock.

The former Red Bull boss was ousted from the Austrian team at the beginning of July last year, ending more than twenty years of collaboration. During this period, he had held the positions of team principal and CEO.

Since this surprise departure, Horner has regularly been associated with several projects to return to Formula 1. The Alpine option appears, however, to be the most serious lead.

Some even mention the possibility of him partnering with former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to participate in this operation.

Mercedes could disrupt the case

Wolff’s supposed interest could, however, complicate Horner’s plans. According to information relayed by the British newspaper The Telegraph, the Austrian businessman is also reportedly considering buying the stake held by Otro Capital and its partners.

Such a scenario would be far from insignificant, as Mercedes already maintains close ties with Alpine. The French team indeed uses the hybrid power units developed by the German manufacturer. This technical relationship could constitute a significant lever in potential financial or strategic negotiations.

Above all, a direct involvement of Mercedes via Wolff in the capital of Alpine would inevitably revive the rivalry between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, two leaders who faced off for a long time when their teams dominated the grid.

Very measured reactions

Asked about these rumors, a Mercedes spokesperson did not deny the group’s interest, while remaining very cautious.

“Mercedes is a key strategic partner of Alpine and we are kept informed of recent developments.”

On the French team’s side, communication has remained just as measured.

“We do not comment on specific names or individuals in particular. Any discussions concern the shareholders and interested parties, not the team.”

Alpine also insists on its sporting priorities: “Our main objective remains the start of the season and the continuation of our progress on track.”

A new Wolff-Horner duel behind the scenes ?

If these discussions materialize, the struggle could quickly go beyond the sporting framework. The rivalry between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner marked Formula 1 for several years, notably during the intense battles between Mercedes and Red Bull for world titles.

A confrontation over the future of Alpine could well relaunch this duel… but this time in the offices rather than on the track.
