The incident could have remained a simple racing fact, but it quickly took on a whole different dimension. During practice for the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Romain Grosjean hit a bird at nearly 370 km/h.

The impact, particularly violent, left visible marks on the single-seater and the French driver’s equipment. Between debris, blood, and reduced visibility, the scene left an impression on observers. But it is not so much the accident itself that sparked outrage, but the driver’s reaction afterwards.

A statement deemed “inappropriate”

After the incident, Grosjean chose a light tone to describe the situation.

“I still have blood on my suit, there were pieces of the bird on the roll bar. I couldn’t see where I was going, there was bird everywhere on the windshield” he explained, before adding ironically “the helmet smells bad, the seat smells bad. I didn’t eat chicken for lunch, I just passed by.”

These remarks immediately provoked a reaction from PETA, the largest global animal rights organization. For them, the tone used by the driver is unacceptable given the seriousness of the incident.

The reaction was swift. Mimi Bekhechi strongly criticized the Frenchman’s remarks: “Romain Grosjean would do better to hope he doesn’t fail in his next race as much as he failed to show empathy.”

“Birds have feelings, apparently more than Grosjean, since he seemed more concerned about his car, his helmet, and his suit — all replaceable — than the death of this defenseless bird” she continued, denouncing a reaction deemed cold and inappropriate.

The organization goes even further, suggesting a lifestyle change: “Instead of simply avoiding chicken at lunch, we suggest he avoid harming birds and other animals” she concluded, announcing the sending of plant-based products to the driver.

A broader debate reignited

This type of incident is not unprecedented in motorsport. Already in 2018, during the Canadian Grand Prix, Grosjean had hit a groundhog on track, reigniting discussions at the time about the safety of wildlife around circuits.

But this time, it is indeed the driver’s communication that is at the heart of the debate. Between dark humor and perceived lack of empathy, the line is thin — and PETA’s reaction shows how much these issues are now scrutinized beyond the simple sporting context.

In a discipline where every word is analyzed, this episode reminds us that the image of drivers is also shaped off the track.
