The start of Mercedes’ 2026 season could quickly create an internal headache. While Kimi Antonelli is stringing together high-level performances and currently dominates the championship, George Russell sees his young teammate taking a considerable lead. A situation that already prompts some observers to question the future hierarchy within the German team.
Among them is Ralf Schumacher, who believes Russell must react quickly if he does not want to be relegated to the background in the fight for the world title.
Antonelli takes on an unexpected dimension
At only 19 years old, Kimi Antonelli impresses the entire paddock. The Italian driver has won four of the first five races of the season and now has a 43-point lead over George Russell in the drivers’ standings.
This gap widened further at the Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell was forced to retire due to an engine failure. Meanwhile, Antonelli continued his streak of solid results and is establishing himself as the main contender for the title.
For Schumacher, the current momentum is clearly in favor of the young Italian.
“For Russell, it certainly won’t get any easier from now on,” explained the former German driver. “He has to start closing the gap right now. That means he will have to invest even more, both in himself and on the track.”
The risk of an explosive rivalry
The former six-time Grand Prix winner also sees a scenario emerging reminiscent of one of the most famous rivalries in Mercedes’ recent history: that between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
According to him, if the two drivers continue to fight regularly at the front, a collision could quickly become inevitable.
“Barcelona is not far away anymore. We will see if the scenario we experienced with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton repeats itself,” he said. “I think at some point, they will end up wheel to wheel on the track.”

This prospect could become a real headache for Toto Wolff if Mercedes maintains its current advantage over the competition.
A threat of number two status
Beyond the sporting rivalry, Schumacher even imagines a scenario in which Mercedes would be forced to decide in favor of Antonelli if the trend continues in the coming weeks.
“If Kimi maintains this level of performance for another three or four races and stays ahead of George, will the team end up making a decision and say: ‘Here is our number one driver’?” he wonders.
However, the German tempers his remarks by reminding that everything will also depend on the gap with other teams. If Mercedes continues to dominate the championship by a wide margin, the team may have no interest in intervening.
On the other hand, if Ferrari, McLaren or Red Bull get closer, points management could become crucial and push Mercedes to favor the driver best placed in the championship.
Russell under pressure
For Schumacher, one thing is certain: George Russell is feeling the impact. The former driver believes the Briton fully senses the threat posed by his young teammate.
“George Russell is obviously affected by the situation. It shows. We noticed it when he took pole position: he was extremely happy and kept talking about it.”
After several seasons establishing himself as the natural leader of Mercedes, Russell now faces the biggest challenge of his career: preventing Kimi Antonelli from definitively taking away his status as the reference within the German team.
