The driver market could ignite in 2026 after a very quiet year. And according to Jolyon Palmer, everything depends on one decision: that of Max Verstappen.

After a 2025 season marked by unusual stability, the driver market could experience a major upheaval in the coming months. At the heart of all discussions, one name keeps coming up insistently: Max Verstappen. The quadruple world champion, under contract with Red Bull until 2028, nevertheless raises many questions about his future.
His doubts concerning the new 2026 regulation cars, combined with Red Bull’s subdued performance at the start of the season, fuel the rumors. Meanwhile, Mercedes largely dominates with three victories in three races, which strengthens speculations of a possible transfer of the Dutchman to the German team.
A decision that can change everything
For former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer, the future of the market depends almost exclusively on Verstappen’s choice. According to him, a departure of the current world champion would cause an immediate chain reaction in the paddock.
“He is clearly the centerpiece. If something happens concerning him, especially a transfer to another team, then we will witness real madness in the market” he explained in the podcast F1 Nation.
Palmer also mentions another equally impactful scenario : that of Verstappen’s outright departure from the sport.
“If he doesn’t change teams but leaves F1, that would free up a seat at Red Bull, which could offer an opportunity to a driver elsewhere” he specifies.
Red Bull in difficulty, Mercedes in a strong position
Red Bull’s complicated start to the season plays a key role in these speculations. The Austrian team seems to be lagging behind a particularly high-performing Mercedes team, which could influence Verstappen’s thinking.
In this context, rumors of a transfer to Mercedes are gaining momentum. Such a move would have major consequences for the entire grid, triggering a domino effect involving several drivers and teams.

“We’ve already said it, it’s quite likely he’ll move at this stage. That’s clearly where all eyes are currently” adds Palmer.
A calmer market if Verstappen stays?
Conversely, if Verstappen chooses to remain loyal to Red Bull, the market could regain some stability, especially at the top of the grid. This is the opinion of James Hinchcliffe, former IndyCar driver, who believes that few changes would be expected among the top teams.
“I think so. The drivers of the top teams are generally performing well. I don’t see Lewis stopping, even if some wondered if he would wait to see Ferrari’s level” he explains.
He also highlights the seven-time world champion’s return to form and Ferrari’s progress, which could freeze positions at the top.
“We find a competitive Lewis and Ferrari has done a good job. So I think the top of the grid will remain quite stable” he adds.
Expected movements at the back of the grid
Even in a calmer scenario, Hinchcliffe still anticipates changes, particularly among midfield and back-of-the-grid teams. These adjustments could occur independently of Verstappen’s choice, depending on individual performances and opportunities.
“I could imagine quite a few movements in the second half of the grid, no matter what” he concludes.
One thing is certain: as long as Max Verstappen has not clarified his position, the driver market will remain suspended on his decision, ready to ignite at the slightest signal.
