With the new technical rules, the weight of the cars has become a key factor… and some teams are already struggling.

The 2026 F1 season marks a historic turning point in Formula 1 with the introduction of a new generation of cars. Between active aerodynamics and new power units, the teams have had to completely rethink their designs.
One of the most complex challenges: meeting the minimum weight set at 768 kg. An objective far from trivial, as the new onboard technologies make the cars heavier.
Result: not all teams are in the same boat at the start of this season.
Mercedes as the benchmark, Williams in great difficulty
At the front of the pack, Mercedes has achieved a true technical feat by staying under the minimum limit. A performance shared with Ferrari and Audi.
Conversely, some teams are lagging significantly behind. Williams is the most struggling with a car estimated at 26 kg above the minimum, a huge performance handicap. The same applies, to a lesser extent, to Aston Martin, which is also behind in this regard.

In Formula 1, every kilogram counts. A heavier car is less efficient in acceleration, braking, and in the corners.
Conversely, teams under the minimum weight can add ballast, which they place strategically to optimize the car’s balance. This offers a valuable advantage, notably for adjusting the center of gravity and improving overall handling.
The 2026 team rankings
Here is an estimation of the weight differences compared to the regulatory limit:
- Mercedes: under the minimum weight
- Ferrari: under the minimum weight
- Audi: under the minimum weight
- McLaren: at the minimum weight
- Haas: +1 kg
- Alpine: +2 kg
- Racing Bulls: +4 to 5 kg
- Cadillac: +6 to 7 kg
- Red Bull Racing: +9 to 10 kg
- Aston Martin: +9 to 10 kg
- Williams: +26 kg
A hierarchy still set to evolve
These gaps are not fixed. Teams will continue to lighten their cars throughout the season thanks to technical developments. But in the meantime, this factor partly explains the current hierarchy, with Mercedes in the lead and some teams in difficulty.
In a Formula 1 where every detail counts, weight could well be one of the determining factors of this 2026 F1 season.
