Always attentive to the evolution of the discipline, Sebastian Vettel has taken a stand on the upcoming regulatory changes in Formula 1. The four-time world champion, retired since 2022, remains an influential voice in the paddock.

Facing criticism from many drivers regarding the 2026 single-seaters, Vettel shows a certain understanding. According to him, while the cars remain impressive to drive, the race experience has become more complex.

“From a sporting point of view, I hear these criticisms and I share them, because the cars are probably fun to drive, but much less to exploit in a race because of the rules and the difficulties that implies,” he explains.

Major changes from Miami

The FIA recently validated a series of technical adjustments that will come into effect from the Miami Grand Prix. The objective is to correct the undesirable effects observed since the beginning of the 2026 season.

Among the main measures, the maximum recoverable energy in qualifying will be reduced to 7 MJ, compared to 8 MJ previously. In parallel, the “superclipping” ceiling will be raised to 350 kW, compared to 250 kW until now.

These developments aim to limit phases of excessive energy management, such as “lift and coast,” and to allow drivers to attack more on track.

Preserving the essence of Formula 1

Beyond the technical aspects, Vettel emphasizes a fundamental point: not to distort Formula 1. For him, the heart of the sport must remain intact despite regulatory evolutions.

“I am very careful that we don’t lose the DNA and the heart of the sport, which is to find the fastest driver in the fastest machine to win the race,” he stresses.

A statement that echoes current concerns about an F1 sometimes judged too dependent on artificial parameters.

The importance of driver feeling

Vettel also reminds us that drivers play a central role in the sport’s attractiveness. Their feeling on track is directly linked to the emotion transmitted to fans.

“I hope, from a sporting point of view, that these changes will make the drivers happier, because they are the face of the sport,” he explains.

He concludes by emphasizing the importance of raw emotion: “If they get out of the car full of adrenaline and excitement, that’s what thrills spectators, whether in front of their screen or in the stands.”

F1 at a crossroads

These regulatory adjustments show that F1 is still in a phase of adaptation to its new technical framework. Between the search for performance, spectacle, and authenticity, the balance remains delicate to find.

With figures like Vettel calling to preserve the essence of the sport, the message is clear: evolve, yes, but without losing what makes the magic of Formula 1.
