After starting the 2026 season with the hope of one day returning to Formula 1, Mick Schumacher now seems to have changed course: he wishes to continue his career in IndyCar for the 2027 season.

The son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher recently achieved his first top 10 of the season at the Nashville speedway, a result that seems to have strengthened his conviction that he has found his place in the American championship.
“I really like these cars and I’m here to stay,” he said on the podcast SpeedStreet hosted by Conor Daly.
An uncertain future
Schumi Jr’s future at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing remains unclear. The team recently sold its third car, which calls into question the availability of his seat for next season. Meanwhile, several rumors already send him to Meyer Shank Racing, where a spot could open up for 2027.
Schumacher also acknowledges that contacts already exist to prepare his future: “It would be a lie to say there have been no discussions. It is important to explore all possibilities and see what can work. It’s not just the car that matters, but also the team and the people you work with. You can only win as a team.”
Schumacher also reflected on his learning of oval circuits, a completely new discipline for him after his career in Europe but where he curiously shines more than on road or street circuits, as evidenced by his “rookie of the year” title at Indy 500 and his recent eighth place in Nashville.

A discovery of ovals
He admits that these races give him a rather unusual feeling: “When I get out of the car after a race on an oval, my head spins from having driven only counterclockwise. I had never felt that before.”
Despite this physical adaptation, the former Haas driver believes that this type of circuit suits his driving style particularly well: “Ovals suit my way of driving better. You have to be extremely precise and show a lot of finesse.”
After several difficult seasons trying to find a place in Formula 1, Mick Schumacher seems to have found a new challenge that suits him. Now fully invested in IndyCar, he clearly shows his intention to build his future there, even if his team for 2027 is still to be determined.
After a short three-week summer break, the IndyCar championship resumes next weekend on the road circuit of Portland, Oregon.
