The Austrian Grand Prix could represent a major turning point in Red Bull’s season. In Spielberg, the Austrian team is introducing its second major package of upgrades of the year, aiming to close the gap that now separates it from the top three teams.
Currently the fourth force on the grid, Red Bull is going through a particularly difficult period. Despite Max Verstappen’s talent, the team struggles to compete with Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren on the most complete circuits.
This situation naturally raises questions about the future of the four-time world champion.
A future still surrounded by uncertainties
Although his contract officially runs until the end of the 2028 season, Verstappen has not yet confirmed that he will stay with Red Bull next year.
Several exit clauses in his contract could allow him to leave the team at the end of this season.
In recent weeks, the Dutchman has participated in several meetings with Red Bull group executives to discuss the future of the sporting project. According to several reports, discussions are expected to continue during the Austrian weekend, as the company’s main decision-makers will be present on site.
However, Verstappen refuses to directly link his future to the result of the upgrades introduced this weekend.
“It’s important for the whole team”
Asked about the weight this package could have in his reflection regarding his future, the Red Bull driver preferred to broaden the debate.
“I think it’s mainly crucial for us as a team” he explained.

“We want to progress between the start of the season and the end of the season. We know we lack performance. The goal is simply to improve the car. I think that’s what everyone wants.”
A cautious response that shows Verstappen does not want to reduce the problem to his personal situation, even though everyone knows that Red Bull’s performance will be decisive in his decision.
Verstappen’s patience has its limits
Since the start of the season, Verstappen has regularly expressed his dissatisfaction with the current competitiveness of the RB22.
The Dutchman has achieved some remarkable performances, notably in Canada and Monaco, but he also knows that these results are more related to his talent than to the real potential of his car.
When asked how long he was willing to wait before seeing concrete progress, his answer remained deliberately vague.
“We’ll see. It’s hard to answer that question right now.”
A statement that says a lot
Verstappen slipped in a particularly revealing phrase about his current state of mind: “We don’t like being the fourth best team, so we want to be better. That’s what we’re working on right now.”
This remark perfectly sums up the situation. Red Bull must quickly demonstrate that it is capable of returning to the fight for victories if it wants to keep its star driver.
In Spielberg, the new parts will therefore be closely watched. Their effectiveness could weigh heavily in the ongoing discussions behind the scenes between Verstappen and Red Bull management regarding the future of the four-time world champion.
