The fiery Argentine president Javier Milei wants to take advantage of the FIA Americas Congress taking place next week in Buenos Aires to accelerate the project of bringing F1 back to Argentina.

The country has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1998, but significant work is currently underway at the Oscar and Juan Gálvez Autodrome in Buenos Aires.
Could Argentina soon regain a place on the Formula 1 calendar? Javier Milei intends to personally get involved in the matter.
The Buenos Aires Autodrome under renovation
The Argentine president has confirmed that he will participate in the FIA Americas Congress, held from August 31 to September 2 in Buenos Aires by the Automóvil Club Argentino. He plans to take this opportunity to meet with the officials of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and promote his country’s candidacy.
“We will work to bring Formula 1 back to Argentina,” Milei said in an interview on national radio. “I will also have a meeting with the FIA people.”
The goal is ambitious since the last Argentine Formula 1 Grand Prix was in 1998. The project mainly relies on the modernization of the Oscar and Juan Gálvez Autodrome, a historic circuit located in Buenos Aires. Renovation work has been launched to allow the track to obtain an FIA Grade 1 homologation, essential to be able to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The work has gained momentum in recent months and the circuit already has a major international event scheduled as MotoGP is set to return there in 2027.

Argentine officials now hope to go further and adapt the infrastructure to F1 requirements, with the ambition to present a credible bid for the upcoming seasons. The sporting context is also favorable for a return of Formula 1 to the country thanks to the presence of Franco Colapinto.
The Alpine driver is currently the only Argentine on the grid, recently confirmed for 2027. Before the Dutch Grand Prix, he has scored 24 points in 37 F1 starts, including 19 points in the first eleven races of the 2026 season. His presence has helped revive Argentine public interest in the sport, as demonstrated by a showcase last winter in Buenos Aires (photo above) and could be an additional argument for promoters of a future Grand Prix.
In the land of Fangio
Argentina also has an important history in Formula 1, notably thanks to Juan Manuel Fangio, five-time world champion and one of the major figures in the sport’s history.
The country hosted its first World Championship Grand Prix in 1953. Several periods of absence then interrupted the event, with the last edition held in Buenos Aires in 1998.
No agreement with Formula 1 has been announced yet and obtaining Grade 1 remains an essential step. But with the circuit renovation, the return of MotoGP and now the personal involvement of Javier Milei, the project of bringing the Argentine Grand Prix back is starting to take on a much more concrete dimension.
