The Australian Grand Prix has not even started yet and one of the local favorites is already forced to retire. Oscar Piastri was eliminated before the start after an accident occurred during the reconnaissance lap at the Albert Park circuit.

The McLaren driver was nevertheless set to start from a solid fifth place on the grid, just ahead of his teammate Lando Norris. A promising position for the young Australian, who hoped to shine in front of his home crowd for the opening round of the 2026 F1 season.

But just a few minutes after the pit lane opened, the situation took a brutal turn.

A loss of control at Turn 5

While performing his reconnaissance lap to join the grid, Piastri lost control of his car approaching Turn 5.

Crossing the kerbs in this fast section of the circuit, the McLaren suddenly snapped. The car spun before ending its run in the barriers on the other side of the track. The impact immediately ended his hopes of participating in the race.

According to information transmitted by the team over Norris’s radio, the loss of control occurred when Piastri was changing gears while still on the kerb. This combination reportedly destabilized the car and caused the off-track excursion.

A grid reduced to 21 cars

Following this accident, the Grand Prix will finally start with 21 cars on the starting grid. This unexpected withdrawal slightly reshuffles the deck in the field, especially for McLaren, which loses one of its assets even before the start of the race.

For the Australian spectators present in Melbourne, the disappointment is also immense. Piastri was one of the main local hopes for a good result in this inaugural round.

This premature retirement is another blow for the Australian driver in his home event. During the previous edition of the Australian Grand Prix, Piastri had already experienced great frustration. While fighting for victory in the rain, an off-track excursion had relegated him to ninth place at the finish.

A year later, bad luck strikes even earlier, as his race ends even before the lights go out.

For Piastri and McLaren, they must now quickly turn the page and focus on the next rounds of the championship, as the 2026 Formula 1 season is only just beginning.
