Formula 1 is entering a pivotal moment in its 2026 season. After several races marked by problems related to the new technical rules, the sport’s authorities have held numerous meetings during the April break.

The FIA, teams, and drivers have thus exchanged ideas to identify concrete solutions, particularly after the difficulties observed in qualifying and certain situations deemed dangerous on track.

These discussions come in a context where the new single-seaters, highly dependent on energy management, have profoundly changed driving and race dynamics.

Two major problems at the heart of the debates

As George Russell recently explained, drivers have targeted two priority areas. The first concerns qualifying, which has become particularly criticized. The inability to drive at full power on certain circuits forces drivers to manage their energy, which goes against the traditional attacking spirit of the fast lap.

The second point concerns safety, with sometimes very significant speed differences between cars. The accident involving Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto in Japan notably highlighted these risks.

After a first sporting meeting on April 15 and then a technical meeting the next day, a crucial step is scheduled for this Monday, April 20. This “high-level” meeting will bring together all stakeholders to evaluate the various proposals on the table and try to find a consensus.

The objective is clear: to reach a quick agreement to adjust the rules without disrupting the overall balance of the championship.

Possible changes as early as Miami

If an agreement is reached, the measures will still need to be validated by the World Motor Sport Council before officially coming into force. The F1 2026 calendar could allow for rapid implementation, potentially as early as the Miami Grand Prix in early May.

However, conditions will not be ideal for testing these adjustments. The next two rounds, in Miami and Canada, will take place in Sprint format, with little practice time.

It will probably be necessary to wait until the Barcelona round, in mid-June, to have a “classic” weekend allowing a full evaluation of the impact of the changes. In the meantime, the passage through Monaco will also complicate the analysis, as this circuit remains atypical and not very representative.

F1 in full adaptation

This phase of discussions illustrates a reality: Formula 1 2026 is still in an adjustment phase. Technical innovations have brought new, sometimes unexpected, challenges.

The ability of the authorities to react quickly will be crucial to guarantee safety, performance, and spectacle. This Monday could therefore mark a major turning point in the season… and perhaps in the evolution of this new era of F1.
