The first round of the 2026 F1 championship was not easy for Aston Martin. On the Albert Park circuit layout, the British team experienced a particularly eventful Sunday during the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Both cars entered in the race ended up retiring, confirming the difficulties encountered by the team since the start of the weekend. Behind the scenes, these problems surprised no one: the reliability issues of the AMR26 were already well known even before the start of the race.

Since the first runs of the season, the green car has been suffering in particular from complications related to its power unit supplied by Honda. These failures have already had a direct impact on the weekend’s program, as Lance Stroll was unable to participate in the third free practice session or qualifying due to a problem with the internal combustion engine.

Fernando Alonso forced to retire early on

Despite these concerns, both drivers did start the race. But the situation quickly deteriorated for Fernando Alonso.

On the 11th lap, the double world champion was instructed to return to the pits immediately and stop his car. The team feared that the mechanical problems would worsen and preferred to avoid more significant damage.

However, after some technical interventions in the garage, the Spaniard was finally able to return to the track. This return was only temporary, however: at the end of the 32nd lap, Alonso had to retire permanently once again.

This strategy was mainly aimed at preserving certain mechanical components, a prudent choice in a season that is just beginning.

Lance Stroll also forced to retire

The scenario was similar for his teammate. A few laps after Alonso’s stop, Lance Stroll also had to end his race.

The Canadian did return to the track later, but the operation no longer had any real sporting stakes. With a considerable delay accumulated during his prolonged stay in the garage, Stroll was already many laps behind the leaders. By the time he crossed the finish line, he finally finished in 17th place, twelve laps behind the winner.

Despite this very disappointing result, Aston Martin believes the situation could have been even worse. Before the race, team principal Adrian Newey had already raised concerns about the vibrations generated by the car.

According to him, both drivers feared the physical consequences of these significant jolts. Fernando Alonso thought it would be difficult to exceed 25 laps, while Lance Stroll estimated that 15 laps would already be an ambitious goal. These extreme vibrations could indeed cause significant pain in the drivers’ hands, or even lead to permanent nerve damage.

A season start under pressure

This opening Grand Prix therefore confirms that there is no shortage of work for Aston Martin. The team will need to quickly find solutions to improve the reliability and behavior of the AMR26. Without rapid progress, the 2026 F1 season could prove to be particularly complicated for the British team, already in difficulty from the first race of the F1 calendar.
