Fernando Alonso’s future continues to fuel discussions in the Formula 1 paddock. At 45 years old, the two-time world champion is entering the final year of his contract with Aston Martin and has yet to confirm what his future will be in 2027.
Between an extension with the British team, retirement from racing, or a possible return to Alpine, several scenarios remain possible. But on Aston Martin’s side, Adrian Newey does not seem particularly worried.
The legendary British engineer has shown great optimism about the chances of retaining the Spaniard for the next season.
Newey shows his confidence
When asked about the importance of extending Fernando Alonso, Adrian Newey did not hide how highly he thinks of the Spanish driver.
“Fernando is obviously an exceptional driver. He brings a lot to the team, both through his technical feedback and his talent behind the wheel. For us, he is naturally very important.”
The former Red Bull genius believes all signs are green to continue this collaboration.
“I am quite confident. Fernando enjoys his experience with us and I think our relationship will continue.”
These remarks contrast with the many speculations that have appeared in recent weeks.
Several options remain open
With Alonso’s contract ending at the close of this season, three possibilities seem to be emerging today: extend with Aston Martin, end his career, or join another team.

In recent months, several rumors have notably mentioned a return to Alpine, where he won his two world titles in 2005 and 2006. Such a choice would constitute a fourth stint within the Enstone team.
Fernando Alonso has, however, downplayed these reports without officially announcing his decision.
The Spanish driver also left doubt during the Spanish Grand Prix by stating that this edition was “probably his last Barcelona Grand Prix in Formula 1”, while explaining that he now approaches each race as if it could be his last.
Aston Martin finally finds reasons to hope
This reflection comes in a particularly difficult sporting context for Aston Martin.
The British team currently occupies the last place in the constructors’ championship with only one point scored, precisely thanks to Fernando Alonso. The Honda engine has experienced many problems since the start of the season and the car has not met expectations.
However, the trend seems to be changing.
The Hungarian Grand Prix was the most encouraging weekend of the season for Aston Martin. Thanks to a significant package of upgrades, Alonso finally managed to get past Q2 for the first time this year, while race pace has significantly closed in on the midfield.
Added to this is the arrival of a Honda engine upgrade planned for the Dutch Grand Prix, the first event after the summer break.
A decision expected in the coming weeks
All these elements could weigh on Fernando Alonso’s reflection.
If performances continue to improve after the break, Aston Martin could offer the Spanish veteran sufficient guarantees to continue the adventure in 2027.
And according to Adrian Newey, confidence is already well established internally. For the Brit, Fernando Alonso remains an essential part of the project and everything indicates that their collaboration is far from over.
