Formula 2 has unveiled the single-seater that will be used during the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons. Without revolutionizing its technical base, the new F2 will benefit from a largely redesigned aerodynamics.

The FIA’s main feeder category is preparing its next generation.
The new single-seater will keep the currently used Dallara chassis as well as the 3.4-liter turbo Mecachrome engine, but several important elements will evolve starting next season.
Closer to F1
The work has mainly focused on aerodynamics. The front and rear wings have been redesigned with the goal of allowing drivers to follow another single-seater more easily.
This evolution aims to reduce the difficulties encountered when a car runs in the disturbed air of the one ahead and, consequently, to promote close racing on track. The driving characteristics of the new F2 have also been designed to be closer to those of current Formula 1 cars.
For Mohammed Ben Sulayem, this new generation must above all allow Formula 2 to maintain its primary function, namely preparing young drivers to move up to the top category: “This car is designed to stimulate young drivers and prepare them for the highest level of motorsport competition”, explains the FIA president.

An onboard starter from 2027
Another important novelty will concern the drivers’ ability to restart their single-seater after an incident. Bruno Michel, CEO of F2, has confirmed the arrival of an onboard starter. Until now, a spin or stall could lead to a driver’s retirement when the engine stopped and no external assistance was possible.
From 2027, drivers will be able to restart their engine themselves in certain situations and resume the race without external intervention, which will avoid too many neutralization periods under safety car conditions.
This new generation of F2 will thus keep much of the current mechanical base, but will mainly seek to improve race quality and prepare drivers for Formula 1. It will debut in competition in 2027 and will remain in use until the end of the 2029 season.
