Kimi Antonelli has confirmed that he will have to serve a grid penalty at Monza. A strategic choice assumed by the championship leader.

Kimi Antonelli is expected to approach the Italian Grand Prix with a significant handicap. The Mercedes driver has confirmed that his team plans to take advantage of the Monza event to introduce new elements of his power unit, which should result in a penalty on the starting grid.
Each driver has a limited number of engine components usable during a season. Once this quota is exceeded, installing new elements automatically results in grid penalties. Mercedes had so far managed to avoid this situation, but Antonelli is now at the limit of his allocation.
Rather than postponing the deadline, the championship leader has therefore chosen Monza, despite the special significance this race holds for the young Italian.
“We will do it at Monza. It is one of the circuits where it is easiest to overtake” explained Antonelli to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The championship before the home victory
The choice may seem surprising since Monza obviously represents one of the most important events of the season for Antonelli. In front of his home crowd, the Mercedes driver would naturally have the ambition to fight for a victory that would have a special meaning.
But the Italian prefers to think on the scale of the championship. With a 50-point lead in the drivers’ standings approaching the second half of the season, he wants to limit as much as possible the consequences of a penalty that has become practically inevitable.
“It is also true that this is my home race, but currently, I am thinking more about the championship” admits Antonelli.

The Monza track, with its long straights and significant braking zones, traditionally offers several overtaking opportunities. Starting further back on the grid is therefore potentially less penalizing than on circuits where positions are much harder to recover.
Antonelli wants to limit the damage at Monza
Mercedes and its driver must now determine how to turn this technical constraint into the least costly strategic decision possible. Antonelli knows that a penalty will have to be served sooner or later and therefore prefers to choose a circuit offering real chances to climb back up.
“Since we will inevitably have to take a penalty at some point in the season, I have to evaluate where I can give myself the best chances to recover positions and achieve a result” he explains.
This approach could prove decisive in a title fight where every point will count. Antonelli does not want to sacrifice more than necessary and considers Monza as the best available compromise.
“That is why Monza is clearly at the top of the list for this penalty. We will still try to come back to have a good race in front of the supporters.”
Before thinking about this Italian deadline, Antonelli must however focus on the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which marks the resumption of the season this weekend after the summer break. With his championship lead, the Mercedes driver starts the second half of the year in a strong position, but with the need to carefully manage every decision likely to affect his quest for a first world title.
