The future of Carlos Sainz could become one of the major topics in the driver market for 2027: arriving at Williams with great ambitions, the Spaniard finds that the team’s performance does not yet meet his expectations.

At 31 years old, Sainz is still considered a solid driver, but his time alongside Max Verstappen and then Charles Leclerc has also helped define his place in the hierarchy.
To find a team capable of regularly competing at the front, his options remain limited.
Red Bull: it all depends on Verstappen
The most prestigious option would be Red Bull. Sainz could be a logical candidate if Verstappen ultimately decided to leave the team. The problem is that the Dutchman now seems likely to continue with Red Bull in 2027. Without Verstappen’s departure, Sainz’s chances of getting a seat at Milton Keynes therefore appear reduced.
A situation reminiscent of 2024, when the Spaniard had to turn to Williams after realizing that the doors of Mercedes and Red Bull remained closed.
Aston Martin, the best opportunity?
Aston Martin probably appears as the most interesting option. It will notably depend on the decision of Fernando Alonso regarding his future. If his compatriot retires, Sainz could become a serious candidate to succeed him.

With its new facilities, its partnership with Honda, and the many recruitments made in recent years, Aston Martin has the means to return to the front ranks. The recent progress shown by the team could also convince Sainz that the Silverstone project offers more potential than that of Williams.
Audi, Alpine and Haas unlikely
Audi now seems out of reach. After long discussions with Sainz in 2024, the German manufacturer currently wishes to continue with Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto.
Alpine represents another theoretical possibility, but a transfer would not necessarily be an obvious step forward. The team also seems to favor continuity with Franco Colapinto. As for Haas, its current performance makes this destination unlikely to meet Sainz’s ambitions.
So Williams remains. The Spaniard can still continue with the Grove team and hope that its development eventually bears fruit. But if a seat opens up at Aston Martin – or, more hypothetically, at Red Bull –, Sainz will have good reasons to seriously consider a move for 2027.
