Kimi Antonelli’s performances since the start of the 2026 F1 season have significantly changed his status in Formula 1. After a sometimes difficult first year of learning, the young Italian has established himself at the top of the hierarchy and is now seen as a major favorite for the world title.
With six wins in the first eleven Grands Prix, the Mercedes driver entered the summer break with a 50-point lead in the championship. A very different situation from that experienced in 2025, when the young man still faced many difficulties regularly finishing in the points.
This success, however, comes with an inevitable consequence: growing fame. At only 19 years old, Antonelli has become one of the main stars of Italian motorsport and acknowledges that this new celebrity requires some adjustment.
Growing popularity in Italy
In his country, Antonelli’s spectacular rise has obviously sparked immense enthusiasm. The Mercedes driver particularly appreciates the welcome he receives when he returns home.
“It’s wonderful to see all this support when I come home,” he confides. “Especially since, as Italians, we are quite emotional. We show our emotions a lot. So seeing all this enthusiasm is wonderful.”
This fervor has increased even more with his early season results. A series of five consecutive wins notably sparked many comparisons with some Formula 1 legends, prompting Toto Wolff to repeatedly call for caution around his young protégé.
Antonelli himself prefers to maintain some restraint in the face of the excitement surrounding him.
“You still have to be careful about the expectations that build up. But it’s always wonderful to come home, especially after a good weekend, and see so much support.”

“There are times when I wish I wasn’t recognized”
This popularity, however, has its downside. While he could still operate in relative anonymity a few years ago, Antonelli now has to deal with the demands linked to his status as a Formula 1 driver and world title contender.
The young Italian thus acknowledges that some everyday situations have become more complicated.
“Regarding fame, there are obviously times when you wish you weren’t recognized when doing certain things, for example when you go out to dinner. But that is also part of an athlete’s life.”
A situation that Antonelli seems to accept with philosophy nonetheless. For him, these constraints remain inseparable from the success he is currently experiencing.
“To be honest, as long as you can enjoy these moments, it can also be very pleasant. But, of course, there are times when I wish I wasn’t recognized. At the same time, I know it’s part of the game and I am very happy like this.”
Antonelli wants to keep his feet on the ground
This ability to take a step back also illustrates the evolution of the Mercedes driver since his debut in Formula 1. Still facing the mistakes and difficulties of a beginner in 2025, Antonelli quickly transformed into a credible championship contender.
His new fame could reach another level in the coming months if he manages to maintain his advantage. With a 50-point lead at mid-season, the Italian has a comfortable margin, but the fight remains open as Ferrari and McLaren have significantly reduced their gap to Mercedes in recent races.
For Antonelli, the challenge will therefore be twofold after the summer break: continue to manage the sporting pressure linked to his quest for a first world title while getting used to a fame that should not diminish if his successes continue.
