As rumors about Max Verstappen’s future continue to fuel the paddock, Martin Brundle believes the Dutchman should stay with Red Bull in 2027. The former driver does not, however, rule out a more radical option.

Max Verstappen’s future continues to be a hot topic in Formula 1. While speculations about a possible departure from Red Bull are increasing, Martin Brundle has shared his analysis of the situation and expresses a clear sentiment: he thinks the four-time world champion will remain with the Austrian team in 2027.
The Sky Sports consultant nevertheless believes that a break in the Dutchman’s career cannot be completely ruled out.
Rumors about Verstappen keep growing
For the second consecutive year, the summer period is marked by questions regarding Max Verstappen’s future. The whispers about a possible transfer to another top team notably gained momentum before the Belgian Grand Prix.
Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari have regularly been mentioned as potential destinations for the Red Bull driver, even though no concrete leads have emerged publicly.
At Spa-Francorchamps, Verstappen did not completely close the door on questions about his future, which helped keep the speculations alive.
This situation also provoked a strong reaction from his father, Jos Verstappen, towards Martin Brundle. The former British driver had stated at Silverstone that “Team Verstappen” had put Red Bull under pressure before exploring other options. A statement that led Jos Verstappen to call Brundle an “idiot”.
Brundle sees few credible alternatives
Despite the many rumors, Martin Brundle believes that the departure options are limited for the Dutch champion.
“Max obviously has a contract if he wants to stay at Red Bull. I’m not sure there are many other possibilities” Brundle explained to Sky Sports.
According to him, the main rival teams already have their own plans for their driver line-ups, which reduces immediate options for Verstappen.

“Team compositions are largely established at McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari. These are the four best teams, and Max is currently racing in the fourth of them, Red Bull” he added.
The hypothesis of a swap involving Oscar Piastri and Red Bull has also been mentioned in recent weeks, but Brundle believes this scenario would be much more complicated to implement than it seems.
“It’s very easy to make a catchy headline out of it, but the reality is much more complex” he emphasized.
An uncertain future despite a contract until 2028
Verstappen is currently tied to Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season. However, certain clauses could allow for a change in the situation depending on the team’s performance and the driver’s ambitions.
For Brundle, communication about his future has become particularly delicate.
“Max has learned the hard way that everything he says can be interpreted differently. And if he says nothing, that also provokes reactions” the former driver explained.
His verdict remains favorable to continuity at Red Bull.
“My intuition tells me Max will stay at Red Bull next year” he concluded.
But Brundle adds a surprising possibility: “A sabbatical year? I don’t think it’s totally impossible either.”
A hypothesis that remains very far from the current reality, but which shows how much Verstappen’s future continues to spark all discussions in the paddock.
