George Russell was penalized for a very slight speeding in the pit lane during free practice in Monaco. A minimal error that nevertheless cost Mercedes a symbolic fine.

During the first free practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix, George Russell was caught speeding in the pit lane.

The Mercedes driver exceeded the authorized limit of 60 km/h… by only 0.3 km/h. An extremely small deviation, but sufficient to constitute a violation of the FIA’s sporting regulations.

This type of infraction, governed by Article B1.6.3a of the Formula 1 regulations, is automatically sanctioned, without margin of appreciation, as soon as the maximum speed is exceeded.

A symbolic fine for Mercedes

Following this infraction, the FIA decided to impose a 100 euro fine on the Mercedes team.

A minimal financial penalty, which reflects the very marginal nature of the observed deviation, but which nevertheless recalls the strict rigor applied in the pit lane, where safety remains the absolute priority.

Even the smallest excesses are not tolerated, in order to avoid any risk in an area particularly frequented by mechanics and teams.

A solid start to the weekend for Russell nonetheless

On the sporting front, George Russell concluded this first free practice session in fifth position, just over a second behind the best time set by Charles Leclerc in front of his Monegasque home crowd.

The Briton also proved slightly slower than his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who finished fourth and about four tenths ahead of him.

Despite this small error in the pit lane, Mercedes remains in the rhythm at the start of this weekend on the Monaco circuit, where the gaps are traditionally very tight and where every detail can make the difference.
