Romain Grosjean’s weekend in Indianapolis ended in an electric atmosphere. Competing with Dale Coyne Racing during the Sonsio Grand Prix, held on the Indianapolis road course before the famous 500 Miles, the Frenchman experienced a frustrating race finishing in a distant 21st place.

Although qualified in 11th position, Grosjean gradually fell back in the standings after several incidents on track, including a clash or a rough maneuver with Marcus Armstrong which seems to have particularly irritated the former Formula 1 driver.

At the finish, the frustration was visibly still very present. Footage shared on social media shows Grosjean heading directly towards Armstrong in the pitlane to discuss their incident during the race.

The situation quickly became tense, to the point that members of the Meyer Shank Racing team tried to prevent the Franco-Swiss driver from approaching their driver.

Marcus Armstrong talks about a “desire to fight”

After the episode, Marcus Armstrong did not hesitate to joke about the situation in front of the American media. The New Zealand driver hinted that Grosjean was particularly upset after their on-track confrontation.

“I don’t know… he wanted a bit of a fight, a bit of UFC or MMA, something I’m not really used to” Armstrong said humorously.

The Meyer Shank Racing driver also joked about the imposing presence of a team member right behind him at the moment of the confrontation.

“I had a 350-pound refueler right behind me, so honestly, it took courage for Romain to come looking for me at that moment” he added.

Armstrong then admitted that the scene almost looked like a Hollywood-style settling of scores.

“I almost wanted to say on the radio: ‘Get ready for a fight in the pits’” he recounted.

A huge misunderstanding over a joke

While the footage quickly circulated on social media, the situation seems ultimately less serious than it appeared at first glance.

Specialist journalist Marshall Pruett, who shared the video of the confrontation, later explained that Romain Grosjean had personally contacted him to clarify the events.

According to the American reporter, part of the tension arose from a joke that was misunderstood.

“Romain called me to explain that he just wanted to talk with Marcus and that he had made a joke about wanting to hit him. This sentence was taken out of context and that’s what created the misunderstanding” Pruett specified on social media.

Grosjean still as explosive on track

This episode once again recalls the particularly fiery temperament of Romain Grosjean when he finds himself under pressure in competition. Since his arrival in IndyCar after his Formula 1 career, the Frenchman has already been involved in several heated exchanges with other drivers.

Even if this altercation seems to have ultimately been limited to a tense discussion and a few misunderstood jokes, it still illustrates the intensity currently reigning in the IndyCar paddock as the legendary Indianapolis 500 approaches.
