The announcement caused a small earthquake in the paddock: Max Verstappen and his long-time engineer Gianpiero Lambiase will end their collaboration by 2028. An iconic duo, becoming one of the most successful in the history of Formula 1, with more than 70 wins and several world titles to their name.
Lambiase’s departure, expected at McLaren in a strategic role, thus marks the end of an era at Red Bull Racing. A decision motivated notably by a major professional opportunity, hard to ignore, even for a key piece of Verstappen’s success.
“I would be stupid to hold him back”
Asked about this separation, Verstappen, who had declared in the past that he would no longer race in F1 if he had another engineer than Lambiase, did not seek to dramatize the situation. On the contrary, the four-time world champion showed a clear-headed and detached stance, far from any frustration.
“Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to race anymore! I would have to work with someone else. Times change, and the offer he received… I would be stupid to try to hold him back” he explains.
The Dutchman insists on an essential point: this decision goes far beyond himself.
“It’s not just about me. It’s also about his career and his future” he adds, emphasizing a relationship based on mutual respect and transparency.

A strong relationship, but looking towards the future
Despite the importance of their collaboration, Verstappen refuses to cling to the past. The bond with Lambiase remains strong, but the two men have already anticipated what’s next.
“We have always had a very honest and open relationship, so everything went well. I wished him the best, there is no resentment” confides the Red Bull driver.
This serenity contrasts with his past statements, where he claimed he did not want to race without his engineer. A position he has since clearly nuanced, showing an evolution in his approach and an ability to adapt.
No impact on his future at Red Bull
While speculations about his future multiply, Verstappen wanted to clarify one point: Lambiase’s departure does not influence his own intentions in any way.
“It has nothing to do with it” he states firmly.
A clear message sent to the paddock, as rumors of departure or even early retirement continue to grow. For now, the Dutchman remains focused on a single goal: to advance Red Bull, no matter the internal changes.
With this stance, Verstappen shows a new facet: that of a leader capable of stepping back, even facing the end of such a strong partnership. A delicate transition, but assumed.
