Everything seemed to be going well for Max Verstappen during the second qualifying race of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Partnered with Lucas Auer, the Dutchman had perfectly built his comeback after a solid start to the race.

Starting in the leading group, Verstappen quickly distinguished himself with several incisive overtakes, notably against Christopher Haase’s Audi and a Ferrari 296 GT engaged in the battle. Very quickly, he took the lead of the race, setting a high pace and gradually widening the gap.

A comfortable lead before the disillusionment

After about an hour and a half of racing, the duo seemed untouchable. The gap with their pursuers already exceeded 30 seconds, proof of perfect strategy and pace management.

But just as victory seemed within reach, a mechanical problem turned everything upside down. Verstappen’s Mercedes suffered an issue with the splitter, an essential aerodynamic element. Forced to return to the pits for repairs, the Dutchman immediately lost all chance of winning.

This twist of fate completely relaunched the race. The #16 Audi, until then in ambush, regained the lead, closely followed by a very threatening Lamborghini. Over the course of relays and pit stops, the gap between the two leaders evolved, oscillating between a few seconds and more than twenty seconds.

Finally, Audi perfectly managed the end of the race to secure the victory, ahead of the Lamborghini and a Porsche from the Manthey Racing team, which completed the podium.

A frustrating but promising result

For Verstappen and Auer, the final result inevitably leaves a bitter taste. The performance was there, as was the potential to claim victory on one of the most demanding circuits in the world. Despite this frustrating outcome, this weekend confirms one thing: Verstappen remains formidable, even outside of Formula 1.

This kind of performance on the Nordschleife testifies to the versatility of the four-time world champion. Capable of adapting to different types of cars and formats, he continues to impress far beyond the F1 paddock.

Even deprived of victory, Verstappen leaves with valuable lessons… and the certainty that he will still have to be reckoned with for the rest of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
