Formula 2 has officialized a major evolution of its 2026 calendar with the addition of two rounds in North America in May, in Miami and then in Montreal: a first in its history.

The Miami and Montreal circuits will respectively host the second and third rounds of the season, in support of Formula 1, following the cancellation of the Sakhir and Jeddah events initially scheduled for April.

The championship will thus head to Miami from May 1 to 3, before continuing in Montreal from May 22 to 24 as part of the Canadian Grand Prix.

American interlude

It will then continue its season in Europe with the traditional Monaco event in early June. This integration into the Canadian program is notable, as the event had previously only featured the F1 Academy as a support series, without the presence of other international or North American championships.

For Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, this solution represents an effective response to the constraints encountered at the start of the season: “While it was not possible to organize the two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this month, it is excellent news that Formula 2 will race in Miami and Montreal.”

He praised the joint work between the various stakeholders to maintain the continuity of the championship despite these cancellations.

Similar satisfaction from Bruno Michel, promoter of the discipline, who sees in this decision a strategic opportunity as much as a successfully met logistical challenge: “Bringing F2 to North America for the first time is truly fantastic. It is something we have wanted to do for a long time,” he explained, while thanking the FIA, Formula 1 and local promoters for their responsiveness.

No Indy 500 for Herta

This calendar change also has notable sporting consequences. The presence of F2 in Montreal notably prevents Colton Herta from participating in the Indianapolis 500, the American having chosen to prioritize his commitment to Formula 2 this season.

Beyond the situational aspect, this expansion into North America marks an important step in Formula 2’s international development strategy. It offers teams and young drivers a new field of expression, while strengthening the championship’s visibility with a key audience for the future of motorsport.
