The Japanese Grand Prix offered a thrilling fight for the final step of the podium. Charles Leclerc and George Russell engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle after the restart following the safety car.

Both drivers had previously overtaken Lewis Hamilton, finding themselves in direct confrontation for third position. On the demanding Suzuka track, every corner became an opportunity for attack or defense.

Russell initially took the advantage by overtaking Leclerc in the final chicane. But the Monegasque was quick to react, immediately reclaiming his position at the first corner of the following lap. A decisive maneuver that ultimately allowed him to secure his second podium in three races this season.

A mental war via radio

Beyond the duel on the track, a more discreet but equally strategic battle was played out over the radio. Charles Leclerc revealed after the race that Mercedes had tried to trick him via messages transmitted to George Russell.

The Ferrari driver explains: “It was very close at times, and they were quite clever, because I think his engineer was giving him certain information over the radio.”

An attempt at destabilization immediately spotted by the Ferrari camp. Thanks to his engineer Bryan Bozzi, Leclerc was informed in real-time of the instructions supposedly transmitted to Russell. But one detail quickly aroused his suspicions.

“My engineer was telling me what his engineer was telling him, but in reality, he was doing exactly the opposite!”

The trap thwarted by Leclerc

This disinformation strategy was clearly aimed at disrupting the Ferrari driver’s defense. By making him believe an imminent attack was coming in a specific zone, Russell could hope to surprise his rival elsewhere on the circuit.

Leclerc details this maneuver: “At one point, I was told he was going to use everything on the back straight… or maybe the main one. But for four laps, he did exactly the opposite.”

A tactic that briefly put the Monegasque under pressure, before he understood the deception: “I understood quite quickly, and I was able to defend.”

A clarity that proved crucial to maintaining his position until the finish.

Between frustration and satisfaction

Despite winning this duel, Charles Leclerc has mixed feelings after the race. The timing of the safety car did not work in Ferrari’s favor, complicating the management of the second stint.

“I was a bit surprised in the last corner at one point, but it was quite a fun race,” he confides. “We were unlucky with the safety car at the wrong time.”

While he believes it wouldn’t have fundamentally changed the outcome of his race, Leclerc admits it made the task more difficult.

In the end, this podium snatched after a duel as intense as it was strategic confirms one thing: in Formula 1, the battle is not only played out on the track… but also in the minds.
