Unease is growing around Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion has recently made several statements suggesting that an early departure from Formula 1 is no longer out of the question.

Struggling during the Japanese weekend, marked by a disappointing qualifying session and an anonymous race finishing in eighth place, the Dutch driver showed his annoyance. Stuck for a large part of the race behind Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, Verstappen was never in a position to play a leading role.

But beyond the result, it was his words that left an impression. “Life is not just Formula 1,” he said, fueling speculation about a possible premature retirement.

2026 rules in the crosshairs

At the heart of this frustration: the new technical regulations. Like several drivers, Verstappen is questioning the direction the discipline is taking, particularly in terms of engines and energy management.

Already critical on several occasions, the Dutchman seems increasingly weary of certain aspects of the sport, to the point of openly mentioning other priorities in his life. A strong stance for a driver still at the top of his game.

These doubts come in a less dominant sporting context for Red Bull, which further reinforces the world champion’s sense of frustration.

Red Bull stalls and refocuses the debate

Faced with the scale of these statements, Laurent Mekies wanted to calm things down. The Red Bull boss clearly indicated that the subject of a possible departure for Verstappen was not on the team’s agenda.

“We are focusing solely on performance. We have no discussions about the rest,” he stated, sweeping aside rumors of an imminent retirement.

For Mekies, the priority is simple: give Verstappen a car capable of fighting for victory: “As soon as we give him a faster car, he will be a much happier Max.”

A way of reminding everyone that competitiveness remains the driver’s main motivator.

An expected response on the track

Red Bull therefore prefers to respond to its champion’s doubts with concrete actions rather than speeches. The goal is clear: to quickly return to a level of performance sufficient to allow Verstappen to fight at the front again.

Regarding the 2026 rules, Mekies acknowledges that they include both positive aspects and areas for improvement. Discussions between the teams are planned in order to adjust certain points.

In the meantime, one thing is certain: as long as Red Bull does not regain its status as the benchmark, questions about Max Verstappen’s future will continue to fuel the paddock.
