Competing in the GT World Challenge Europe at Le Castellet, Jules Gounon endured a particularly difficult event alongside his teammates Dani Juncadella and Chris Lulham. Despite his health already being significantly compromised even before the start, the French driver insisted on taking the wheel to defend his team’s colors.
Suffering from food poisoning, Gounon had spent a complicated night, marked by severe dehydration and a lack of sleep. These were far from ideal conditions to face a demanding endurance race, where mental clarity and physical condition are essential.
Despite this, the crew managed to reach the finish in ninth place, in a race also marked by the presence of Lance Stroll. An honorable result given the circumstances, but one that primarily hides a true human ordeal for the French driver.
A superhuman effort behind the wheel
Determined not to give up, Gounon gritted his teeth to complete a particularly grueling double stint. The driver did not hesitate to push his limits, despite an extremely fragile physical condition.
“Last night, I had food poisoning, I lost a lot of fluids and I barely slept,” he explained, before thanking those around him for their support.
“A big thank you to Dani who helped me get to the medical center, as well as to the doctors who allowed me to take the start.”
Aware of the difficulty that awaited him, he nevertheless decided to fight until the end.
“I rested as much as possible before the race, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I gave everything during the double stint, probably one of the most difficult of my career,” he confided.

A shocking collapse after his stint
But the efforts made eventually had serious consequences. Barely out of the car, Gounon suffered a collapse, losing consciousness and requiring immediate care from the medical teams.
“After my stint, I completely lost consciousness and had to return to the medical center for several hours,” he says.
Treated quickly, the driver was able to recover under supervision, surrounded by his team members and medical staff. He wanted to praise their responsiveness and support during this delicate moment.
“A huge thank you to the medical team and the entire team who stayed by my side.”
A lesson in resilience
Beyond the sporting result, this race will remain a significant experience for Jules Gounon. The Frenchman primarily takes away a demonstration of resilience and pushing one’s limits.
“It’s not the result we hoped for, but it’s a day that reminded me what resilience really means,” he concluded.
A powerful testimony that illustrates the extreme demands of motorsport, even outside of Formula 1.
