New blow for Aston Martin: Fernando Alonso deprived of track time in Melbourne

The start of the 2026 season is turning into a nightmare for Aston Martin. In Melbourne, Fernando Alonso was not even able to take to the track during the first free practice sessions due to a new mechanical problem.

The situation is getting even more complicated for Aston Martin at the start of this championship. The British team has confirmed that Fernando Alonso would not participate in the first free practice session of the Australian Grand Prix.

The cause: a suspected problem with the power unit that immobilized his car even before the start of the session on the Albert Park track. The team was therefore unable to launch the AMR26 on track, depriving the double world champion of precious track time.

This absence represents a significant handicap for the Spaniard. The first practice sessions are crucial for understanding the behavior of the car and refining the settings, especially in a season marked by new technical regulations.

Losing more than an hour of track time at the start of the weekend further complicates Alonso’s preparation.

A very complicated start to the season for the team

Since winter testing, Aston Martin has been going through a particularly difficult period. The 2026 car seems to suffer from a lack of power and serious reliability problems, which has significantly limited the mileage accumulated by the team.

These difficulties coincide with the launch of the new engine collaboration with Honda, which marks the beginning of a new technical era for the Silverstone-based team. For now, this transition is proving to be much more complicated than expected.

The team principal, Adrian Newey, even acknowledged that the vibrations generated by the engine posed a serious problem for the drivers.

According to him, these vibrations could, in extreme cases, lead to permanent nerve damage in the drivers’ hands if they stayed on track too long with this level of intensity.

Faced with this worrying situation, the team is working actively to identify the precise origin of the problem and try to provide quick solutions.

Strongly limited track activity

In the immediate future, Aston Martin is forced to reduce drastically its track program. As long as the source of the vibrations and mechanical problems is not fully controlled, track outings will remain limited.

This strategy aims to avoid worsening technical issues while protecting the drivers, notably Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll, who have already mentioned the extreme discomfort felt in the car.

For Alonso, this missed first session constitutes a new setback in an already very complicated start to the season for the team.

Other incidents during the first session

The start of the session in Melbourne was not entirely smooth for several teams on the grid. The young driver Arvid Lindblad notably had a difficult moment for his practice debut with Racing Bulls, his car remaining immobilized at the pit exit.

For their part, the two McLaren drivers also encountered some issues related to the new power units introduced for the 2026 F1 season.

These incidents illustrate the technical challenges that several teams are facing with this new generation of cars.

For Aston Martin, however, the situation seems more worrying than ever. Even before the first full session of the Australian weekend, the British team already finds itself chasing time… and solutions.
