At Mercedes, everything seems in place to witness an intense fight for the title between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. With a dominant car at the start of the 2026 F1 season, the two teammates appear as the main contenders for the world crown.

After three races, Antonelli leads the debate with two wins against one for Russell, even though the Brit also shone during the sprint in China. The gap remains tight, but the momentum is starting to take shape, announcing an internal confrontation that could quickly become explosive.

Palmer criticizes a too “smooth” precedent

But for Jolyon Palmer, one thing must absolutely be avoided: reproducing the too disciplined duel observed at McLaren in 2025 between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. According to him, this rivalry lacked spice, with both drivers too often content to follow team orders.

“I would like to see a bit more fight between the Mercedes drivers over the course of the season. I think McLaren last year is a reference: it was simply too calm, they constantly followed team orders” Palmer believes.

“Even when there were consequences after what happened in Singapore, and Lando took the hit, that was the only moment I saw a real confrontation between Norris and Piastri. Apart from that, they simply listened to the team and played the game, which is very good for McLaren, they won, everyone is happy.”

Rivalry, the engine of the show

Palmer insists on an essential point: while this approach allowed McLaren to maximize its results, it limited the sporting intensity of the duel. Yet, for observers and fans, it is precisely this raw rivalry that makes all the flavor of Formula 1.

The memory of the explosive duel between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2016 still remains in everyone’s minds, and many hope to find this level of tension at Mercedes this season. Antonelli and Russell have so far displayed a cordial understanding, but the fight for the title could quickly change the game.

How far will Mercedes let it go?

The big question now remains internal management. Will Mercedes accept a total confrontation between its drivers, at the risk of compromising some results, or will it quickly impose strict rules to avoid any overflow?

One thing is certain: if Antonelli and Russell start fighting without restraint, the championship could shift into a whole other dimension. And that is precisely what Palmer demands.
