But it is its test livery that stole the show: a vibrant tribute to the McLaren M6A, the Can-Am car driven by Bruce McLaren in 1967 (in the background in the photo above).

Honoring an unfinished ambition

The choice of colors goes far beyond mere aesthetics: it is a direct bridge to the brand’s origins.

In an Instagram post, McLaren highlighted the importance of this moment: “Here is the FIA WEC Hypercar and 24 Hours of Le Mans car that will bring McLaren back to the top of endurance racing. And the livery? Inspired by the M6A, our first championship-winning car, designed and driven by Bruce himself.”

After winning Le Mans in 1966 with Ford alongside his compatriot Chris Amon, Bruce McLaren dominated the Can-Am championship in 1967. It was behind the wheel of the M6A that he was already envisioning a return to Le Mans, this time with his own brand. Unfortunately, he was never able to realize this dream. Today, as it prepares to join the WEC in 2027, McLaren carries this historic ambition into the future.

An ultimate ambition in motorsport

While Mikkel Jensen is currently the only confirmed driver for 2027, the testing program is already in full swing with talents like Richard Verschoor, Grégoire Saucy and Ben Hanley.

For CEO Zak Brown, it is not just about winning a race, but about establishing McLaren as the most versatile entity in motorsport: “McLaren Racing now has three cars competing in the world’s biggest championships: Formula 1, IndyCar, and the WEC.”

This paves the way for a legendary goal: to conquer the Triple Crown, namely the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the experienced United Autosports team (co-owned by Brown) managing the Hypercar program, all the elements are coming together.

As the MCL-HY begins its testing, the motorsport world holds its breath: will the spirit of Bruce McLaren finally triumph on the Hunaudières straight in a car bearing his name?
