When Lewis Hamilton arrived at McLaren in 2007, the Briton immediately faced a huge challenge: sharing the garage with Fernando Alonso, then two-time reigning world champion after his titles with Renault.
At only 22 years old and in his very first Formula 1 season, Hamilton refused to settle for just a promising rookie role. Very quickly, the rivalry with Alonso became intense, especially around the status within the team.
The Spaniard naturally felt he deserved the number one driver treatment due to his record, while Hamilton wanted to prove he had the level to compete on equal terms.
Hamilton demands fair treatment
The current Ferrari driver revealed that at the start of the 2007 season, McLaren regularly favored Alonso with more advantageous strategies in qualifying.
Hamilton explains in particular that his teammate often benefited from a lighter fuel load, which gave him a natural advantage on a fast lap.
“Fernando systematically received less fuel than me, by about two laps difference” he recalls.
The Briton insists he constantly had to compensate for this disadvantage with a higher pace.
“I felt like I had to work twice as hard. I had to be at least a tenth faster than him to be able to beat him.”

The turning point of the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix
Before the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton finally convinced McLaren to give him exactly the same amount of fuel as Alonso. A decision that changed everything.
“I told them: just give me the same chance, and I’ll show you what I can do” he says.
Immediate result: Hamilton took pole position in Montreal before winning the race, marking the very first victory of his F1 career.
This success remains today a defining moment for the seven-time world champion.
“It was very special because I fought for something I really believed in. When I got that opportunity, I confirmed that belief. And then, the rest is history.”
A foundational victory for what followed
At the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, Hamilton had dominated Alonso impressively. He set a time four tenths faster in qualifying before winning the race, while the Spaniard finished only seventh.
This victory marked the true beginning of the Briton’s rise to the top of Formula 1, in a legendary 2007 season for the intensity of the rivalry between the two McLaren drivers.
