The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying session could have consequences for Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes driver will indeed have to explain himself to the FIA stewards after an incident involving Lando Norris.
The situation occurred during the second phase of the session, SQ2, held on the Shanghai circuit. As Norris was starting a fast lap, Antonelli was driving at reduced speed approaching the first corner.
At the moment the McLaren driver reached the apex to start his attempt, the Mercedes was still on his line. Norris was forced to change his line to avoid any contact, which immediately compromised his flying lap.
Norris forced to abandon his lap
Surprised by the presence of the Mercedes in front of him, Norris had to lift off and pull away to avoid a collision. The incident caused him to lose enough time to make his attempt useless.
The reigning world champion was quick to report the situation to his team over the radio. Moments later, race control confirmed that the incident was under investigation.
Initially reported as a simple incident under observation, the case was quickly referred to the stewards for an investigation after the session. Despite this episode, both drivers still managed to qualify for SQ3, the final eight-minute phase that determines the starting grid for the sprint race.

On the sporting side, the session was very positive for Antonelli. The young Italian driver set the second fastest time in SQ2, just behind his teammate George Russell. Norris, for his part, finished the session in sixth place before fighting to improve his position during the final phase of sprint qualifying.
However, Antonelli’s result could still be called into question if the stewards feel that his behavior significantly impeded the McLaren driver’s attempt.
A possible penalty on the sprint grid
If Antonelli is found guilty of blocking Norris, the most likely penalty would be a three-place grid penalty for the sprint race. This type of sanction is relatively standard in this kind of situation when the interference is deemed unintentional.
However, if the stewards consider the maneuver to be particularly dangerous, the penalty could be heavier. In this case, Antonelli could drop five places on the grid.
At this stage, the most likely scenario remains a standard penalty, as there is no indication that the incident was intentional. However, the stewards will have to analyze precisely the telemetry data and onboard footage before rendering their verdict.
The outcome of the investigation could have a direct impact on the starting grid for the sprint race held on Saturday at the Shanghai circuit, where every position will be crucial in a particularly tight field at the start of the season.
