Leader at the start of the 2026 season, Mercedes is already facing challenges. George Russell denounces unfair pressure from his rivals.

The start of the 2026 season is clearly in Mercedes’ favor. With two one-two finishes in the first races, the German team immediately established itself as the benchmark under the new regulations.
But this early dominance did not go unnoticed… nor without reaction. Several rival teams quickly pointed to certain technical aspects of the German single-seater, particularly around the engine and front wing.
For George Russell, this situation is nothing unusual in the sport, but he believes the paddock’s reaction goes too far.
“That’s how the sport works. But we worked very hard to get here, and the best team should win” he reminds us.
“Everyone is trying to slow us down”
Russell doesn’t hide his frustration with the criticism targeting Mercedes. According to him, some teams are more focused on slowing down his team’s progress than improving their own performance.
“I don’t think it’s really fair that everyone is trying to slow us down, especially after only two races” he says.
The Briton points out that Mercedes has come through several difficult seasons, far from its past dominance. This return to the top would therefore be the result of solid work, not a questionable advantage.
“We had four difficult years. Other teams dominated during that period. Now that we’re ahead, it’s not right to want to slow us down.”
Gray areas already under scrutiny
Among the points of tension, the question of engine compression ratio particularly made headlines before the season started. The FIA settled the matter by imposing a modification from June 1st.

Another monitored point: the front wing of the W17, suspected of abnormal movements. Mercedes clarified, however, that this was not an intentional concept, but unexpected behavior.
These various elements illustrate how closely every technical detail is scrutinized when a team gains the upper hand.
An advantage… but for how long?
Despite this ideal start, Russell remains realistic. The 2026 season, marked by a major regulatory change, offers enormous development potential for all teams.
Current gaps could quickly narrow, particularly thanks to additional opportunities given to lagging power units via the ADUO system.
“It’s a very long season, things will evolve” he warns.
He notably cites the potential progress of his rivals: “Red Bull is overweight for now, McLaren hasn’t yet introduced upgrades… We mustn’t forget these elements.”
Mercedes on a knife’s edge
While Mercedes has had a perfect start to its season, nothing is yet assured. Russell is fully aware of this and refuses any overconfidence.
“We have an advantage currently, but there’s no guarantee it will last” he concludes.
Between political pressure, technical development and competitors’ reaction, the battle is just beginning. And in this context, Mercedes will have to prove that its leader position is as solid over time as it is today.
