Fred Vasseur already warned about a possible explosive conflict at Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc show excellent harmony at Ferrari, but some observers believe that a title fight could quickly raise tensions within the Scuderia.

Since the arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, the atmosphere seems particularly calm between the seven-time world champion and Charles Leclerc. The two drivers work in the same direction and mainly try to help the Scuderia return to the top after several frustrating seasons.

But this harmony may not last forever. Because even if Ferrari is still behind Mercedes in the championship, the Italian team hopes to gradually return to the fight for regular wins.

And inevitably, if the SF-26 suddenly became the best car on the grid, the internal battle between Hamilton and Leclerc could quickly become one of the most explosive topics in the paddock. This is precisely what former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer imagines.

Jolyon Palmer doubts Vasseur’s ability to manage the situation

During the F1 Nation podcast, Palmer explained that he finds it hard to see Fred Vasseur controlling a rivalry between two drivers as ambitious and talented as these.

According to him, the very profile of the two men would make the situation extremely delicate for the Ferrari boss.

Hamilton remains one of the most decorated drivers in history with seven world titles, while Leclerc has represented for several years the future of Ferrari and one of the fastest talents of his generation.

For Palmer, neither would naturally accept a number two role.

“There is inevitably ego in all drivers. To be world champion, you have to think you are the best” explained the former Renault driver.

He believes the pressure would quickly become enormous if Hamilton and Leclerc found themselves at the same performance level with a car capable of aiming for the world title.

“Lewis has won seven titles, Charles is a generational talent still seeking his first crown. I don’t think Fred can really manage that if both are at the same level” he added.

Ferrari facing a scenario already seen in Formula 1

Formula 1 has already experienced several internal rivalries that became uncontrollable. The duel between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes remains one of the most famous examples of the modern era.

The tension reached a peak in 2016 with several spectacular collisions, notably the one in Barcelona where the two Mercedes eliminated each other on the first lap.

At the time, Toto Wolff even considered strong sanctions to calm his drivers. But for Palmer, this type of threat remains mostly theoretical.

“Toto sometimes said he could bench both drivers after certain incidents, but it’s not really feasible” he recalled.

The former British driver also points out that between contracts, marketing stakes, and media pressure, a team principal ultimately has few real levers when two drivers are fighting for the championship.

Leclerc and Hamilton, a ticking time bomb ?

For now, Ferrari has not yet faced this problem. The car’s performance still prevents Hamilton and Leclerc from regularly fighting for wins against Mercedes and McLaren. But if the Scuderia manages to reduce its gap in the coming months, the situation could quickly evolve.

Charles Leclerc still dreams of delivering a world title to Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton aims for a historic eighth crown which would allow him to definitively surpass Michael Schumacher.

Two immense goals, two strong personalities, and two drivers convinced they can become world champion. And in such a context, even an experienced director like Fred Vasseur could have difficulty avoiding tensions within the Ferrari garage.
