This new department is intended to strengthen the role of technology and artificial intelligence within the organization.
Holder of a doctorate in computer science from the University of St Andrews, Smith has a particularly prestigious career in the technology sector.
He notably spent ten years at Google and DeepMind, where he led several teams specializing in large-scale platforms and products.
A New Style of Expert
Among his major achievements is the creation of the Android data platform, used by several thousand engineers and serving to guide performance decisions on nearly three billion devices worldwide.
After this experience, he co-founded Human Native AI, a startup specializing in data and artificial intelligence, before its recent acquisition by Cloudflare. Williams emphasizes that Smith built his reputation by combining technical expertise, product development, and the management of major technological transformations, with a strong specialization in the deployment of large-scale AI solutions.
This arrival is part of a global modernization strategy pursued for several years at Grove. The team already collaborates with several leading technology partners, including Atlassian, Anthropic, VAST Data, Brillio, and Keeper Security.

From Google to Williams
For James Smith, Formula 1 today represents one of the most fascinating application grounds for data and artificial intelligence technologies: “I am delighted to join Williams at a time when data and AI are becoming increasingly important for performance, both on and off the track.”
The former Google executive is particularly attracted by the ambition displayed by the British team: “Williams has an exceptional history, but what attracts me most is the ambition for its next phase of development: building the systems, products, and culture needed to compete at the forefront.”
He hopes to leverage the experience gained in Silicon Valley to accelerate this transformation: “My goal is to help the team move quickly, use artificial intelligence pragmatically, and transform complex ideas into concrete advantages.”
Leveraging Data
From James Vowles’ perspective, this appointment illustrates a growing conviction in the paddock: the exploitation of data and AI has become a performance factor as strategic as aerodynamics or track operations.
According to the Williams boss, the next big battle of the championship will now be fought over the teams’ ability to intelligently exploit their data: “Success in Formula 1 has always relied on the combination of technological innovation and the best people. With technology evolving at lightning speed, the new battlefield in Formula 1 lies in our ability to leverage data and artificial intelligence across all areas of the team.”
This appointment thus confirms a fundamental trend: Formula 1 no longer only recruits engineers from motorsport, but also tech, cloud, and artificial intelligence specialists, who have become key players in modern performance.
