Imola, Barcelona and Zandvoort would thus be ready to host replacement Grands Prix if some events could not be held.
An emergency situation considered if the war in Iran continues in the coming months involves rethinking the schedule for the end of the current championship and the start of the next season.
The influence of geopolitics
The calendar should theoretically keep Qatar and Abu Dhabi to conclude the year 2026 with Imola as a backup plan, while slots would have been arranged to allow the addition of European events next year without disrupting the entire program. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also assured that he has several scenarios to maintain his goal of 24 races in 2027.
The presence of Zandvoort among the backup solutions is particularly surprising. The Dutch circuit hosted on August 23 what was supposed to be its final Dutch Grand Prix, with promoters deciding not to extend their contract. It could therefore make a one-off return as early as 2027 if the situation requires it, but this seems unlikely.
Barcelona, absent from the calendar for a year before a planned return in 2028, is another possibility. Imola completes this list and would simultaneously be considered the preferred option to host a possible European finale of the 2026 season if the last races in the Middle East could not take place. A decision in this regard is expected by the end of September.

These three circuits mainly have the advantage of having infrastructure recently used by F1, which would allow them to be mobilized relatively quickly.
Melbourne to open the championship?
The Australian Grand Prix could become the opening round of the competition again in 2027 in case of cancellation or postponement of the events planned in the Middle East, depending on the evolution of the war in Iran. Formula 1 would then bring forward its Asian tour which plans a triple meeting in Melbourne, Shanghai and Suzuka within two weeks in the first half of April, probably to make room for replacement rounds in Europe.
Only drawback: the Melbourne paddock is under renovation with the construction of a new building overlooking the pit lane and redesigned garages. In this tense context, moving the Australian event forward by several weeks could prove futile but the organizers have promised to do their best, happy to potentially regain the status of season opener.
The issue of preliminary testing would also arise since they are scheduled on the Sakhir circuit ahead of the Grand Prix. Imagining this scenario in Australia would be a logistical nightmare, so Barcelona positions itself as the favorite to host the pre-season tests planned for late February/early March.
