Outpaced by Kimi Antonelli despite a very competitive Mercedes, George Russell is going through a difficult period. David Coulthard believes the Briton must above all avoid falling into the trap of “overanalysis”.

The first half of the 2026 F1 season has not followed the scenario hoped for by George Russell.
The Briton had perfectly launched his campaign by winning the Australian Grand Prix, the first round of the year. But since Melbourne, he has added only one more victory to his tally.
Meanwhile, his teammate Kimi Antonelli has won six times and has gradually taken control of the championship.
At mid-season, Russell is now 59 points behind the Italian. A significant gap while Mercedes has one of the most competitive cars on the grid.
For David Coulthard, the challenge is now as much mental as it is sporting.
Coulthard: “How much bad luck can one person have?”
The former McLaren driver believes Russell’s results do not fully reflect his performance level.
The Briton has notably been penalized by several reliability issues and on-track incidents that have cost him valuable points.
“It has been catastrophic. How much bad luck can one person have?”, wonders David Coulthard on the Up To Speed podcast.
Part of these difficulties is therefore directly out of the driver’s control.
“On one hand, this bad luck is something the team must solve. On the other, George is no longer riding a positive momentum.”
And it is precisely in this kind of situation that Coulthard identifies a danger: starting to overthink instead of letting his instincts take over.
Russell must avoid “overthinking”
To illustrate his point, Coulthard makes a comparison with tennis.
“You know, when you see a tennis player receive a high ball and he can easily smash to win the point, then he sends it into the net because he starts overthinking.”
According to the Scot, Russell is currently in a similar situation.
“George is going through this phase of the season where Kimi simply drives on instinct and benefits, except for Barcelona, from fairly good reliability, while George keeps taking hits.”
The difficulty for Russell will therefore be not to let the accumulation of setbacks influence his driving at the moment when he must precisely maximize every opportunity to get back into the championship.
Antonelli’s youth could become an advantage
Coulthard paradoxically believes that Kimi Antonelli’s lack of experience can work in favor of the young Italian.
At only 19 years old and in his second season in Formula 1, the Mercedes driver has much less experience than Russell. But this inexperience can also allow him to approach certain situations with more spontaneity.

“George is a bit older. Experience is a good thing, but the advantage of youth is that you don’t know what you don’t know.”
Conversely, an experienced driver knows perfectly well the possible consequences of a bad streak.
“The downside of experience is that you know the difficulties, the challenges, the importance of momentum and all those things.”
Antonelli can thus focus mainly on his performance while Russell must also manage the weight of a campaign that has gradually become more complicated.
A comeback in the championship still possible
Mathematically, nothing is obviously over for George Russell.
Coulthard also recalls that Max Verstappen recently demonstrated that a significant deficit can still be made up in the championship.
“As we saw with Max Verstappen last year, it is always possible to come back after such a points deficit.”
The Dutchman made a spectacular comeback in 2025 after being more than 100 points behind, ultimately falling short by only two points to Lando Norris.
But Coulthard does not hide that Russell’s mission looks particularly difficult.

The former Scottish driver uses one last particularly vivid comparison to describe the magnitude of the challenge awaiting Russell.
“Even Sylvester Stallone wouldn’t write a Rocky movie with such a comeback after all the hits he has taken.”
Coulthard therefore considers that this season could mainly be an important test for the Briton’s character.
“It will be a year that will forge George’s character.”
With still half the championship to play, Russell has enough time to reverse the trend. But to hope to catch up with Antonelli, he will not only need better reliability but also to regain the momentum that allowed him to start the season with a victory.
And according to Coulthard, this will first require one thing: continuing to drive naturally rather than letting the accumulated difficulties lead him to overthink.
