Toto Wolff admits that Mercedes is considering taking an engine penalty voluntarily before the end of the season, with Monza appearing as a credible option.

The fight for both championships could soon force Mercedes to make a major strategic decision.
The team principal, Toto Wolff, has confirmed that his team is studying the possibility of introducing new power unit elements on the cars of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, a decision that would automatically result in a grid penalty.
In Formula 1, each driver has a limited number of engine components for the entire season. Exceeding this quota imposes a grid drop, which often leads teams to carefully choose the circuit where they prefer to take this penalty.
“Regarding engine penalties, I sincerely hope that we can avoid them.”
Monza, the ideal candidate?
If Mercedes were to ultimately make this decision, the Italian Grand Prix appears to be the most likely scenario.
Thanks to its long straights and numerous overtaking opportunities, the Monza circuit is traditionally considered one of the best places to limit the consequences of starting from the back of the grid.
“We have to decide if we should take this penalty, when, and on which circuit. On paper, Monza seems to be a good place to do it.”
The choice would however have a special resonance for Kimi Antonelli, who would be racing in front of his home crowd.

A joke… with Antonelli’s father
Toto Wolff also humorously acknowledged that such a decision might not be welcomed enthusiastically within the Antonelli camp.
The Mercedes boss joked about a discussion with Marco Antonelli, the father of the world championship leader.
“I will have to talk to Marco to see if we really want to take an engine penalty at Monza. At least, starting from the back of the grid would take some pressure off for a home race!”
Behind this joke lies a real strategic headache for Mercedes.
Reliability remains a source of concern
If this consideration exists today, it is primarily because Mercedes has encountered several reliability issues since the start of the season.
Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have already been penalized by mechanical failures, fueling doubts about the team’s ability to finish the season without exceeding the allowed quota of components.
Toto Wolff acknowledges that this factor will weigh heavily in the final decision.
“Our reliability simply hasn’t been good enough. So we will see if we ultimately have to take a penalty or not.”
As the fight for the drivers’ and constructors’ titles promises to be intense after the summer break, Mercedes will have to find the right balance between preserving its reliability and limiting the sporting impact of a possible engine penalty.
