The Australian Grand Prix highlighted McLaren’s gap to its main rivals. Oscar Piastri finished qualifying 0.862 seconds behind pole-sitter George Russell, while Lando Norris finished the race more than 50 seconds behind the leader.
With Piastri’s retirement in the race, the team finds itself third in the F1 constructors’ standings, but already 33 points behind Mercedes, highlighting the scale of the challenge to close the gap.
Major updates will not be immediate
Neil Houldley, applied technical director at McLaren, acknowledged that substantial improvements on the MCL40 are not expected for several races.
“We have collected and analyzed a lot of data since the first tests of the MCL40 in January, and the weekend in Australia provided valuable new information. We know there is still a lot to do to fully exploit the performance of the power unit while notably improving cornering grip,” he declared.

The technician insists that the team is continuing its work to optimize the car in all conditions, but that significant gains will require time and continuous effort.
A progressive strategy to move back up
For McLaren, every race becomes a development stage: “The next rounds will be an opportunity to continue this work and extract the maximum performance from our current configuration. The team, both on track and at Woking, is working hard to prepare future major updates,” explains Houldley.
The immediate objective for China is clear: maximize the available performance and prepare for both Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s main race. McLaren engineers hope to gradually close the gap with Mercedes and Ferrari, capitalizing on every piece of data collected during the first races.
Patience and perseverance
While McLaren remains confident in its development plan, fans will have to be patient. The MCL40’s progress will be gradual, and visible results will only be felt in several races, as the team continues to refine its project for this new era of Formula 1.
