Lewis Hamilton was quick to react after his collision with George Russell at the Belgian Grand Prix. Deemed responsible for the collision by the stewards, the Ferrari driver explained that he intended to quickly contact his former teammate to ensure he was okay.
The incident occurred on the first lap, at the entry to Les Combes. Fighting side-by-side, Hamilton made contact with Russell’s Mercedes, which spun out before ending its race in the gravel trap.
The Briton received a five-second penalty, compromising his chances of a podium finish.
“I’m going to send him a message”
After the finish, Hamilton indicated that he wanted to talk with Russell once the excitement of the weekend had died down.
“I’m going to send him a message a little later, because after the race everyone leaves quickly.”
The seven-time world champion insisted on the respect he has for his former Mercedes teammate.

“The last thing you want is to collide with your former teammate or with your former team. I have a lot of respect for George, but unfortunately, it happened.”
An increasingly competitive Ferrari
Despite this penalty, Hamilton managed to climb back to fourth place thanks to a pace he considers particularly encouraging.
Ferrari thus confirms its rise in power after Charles Leclerc’s victory at Silverstone and his second place at Spa, two circuits that nevertheless seemed unfavorable to the Scuderia.
Hamilton believes that this progress is the result of the work done in Maranello.
“It just shows that the car is moving in the right direction. The whole team is doing a remarkable job bringing improvements almost every weekend.”
Even if his podium vanished after the collision with Russell, Hamilton therefore leaves Belgium with reasons for satisfaction. Convinced of Ferrari’s rediscovered potential, he now hopes to quickly turn the page on this collision by re-establishing dialogue with his former teammate.
