The Australian Grand Prix was not an easy ride for Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion experienced an eventful weekend in Melbourne, which began with a major scare during qualifying.
The Dutch driver was indeed the victim of an accident in the opening minutes of the session. His car spun in the first corner of the Albert Park circuit after a rear-wheel lock-up.
The incident, which recalls the one suffered by Lance Stroll during winter testing in Bahrain, is reportedly not linked to a driving error. It was allegedly caused by a similar technical problem.
Direct consequence: Verstappen found himself forced to start from the last position on the grid, a rare situation for the Red Bull driver.
A solid comeback… but full of obstacles
Despite this complicated start, Verstappen quickly began his climb through the field. The Dutchman managed to gain many positions throughout the race.
However, his task was complicated by several factors. One of them concerned energy management: his battery was completely empty at the start, which limited his attacking ability in the first laps. In the middle of this comeback, an unexpected opponent gave him a hard time: the young Arvid Lindblad.
In his very first race in Formula 1, the 18-year-old Briton proved particularly solid in defense. Several drivers struggled to overtake him, including Verstappen himself.
A tense incident in the pit lane
The situation became tense during Verstappen’s only stop. On lap 19, a virtual safety car was deployed after Valtteri Bottas retired, whose Cadillac came to a halt on the inside of the last corner. Several drivers then took advantage of this neutralization to pit.

Verstappen entered the pit lane just behind Lindblad. Approaching the box, the Dutchman seemed to close in on the rookie before getting very annoyed on the radio.
“He’s braking on purpose in front of me!”, he fumed to his team, accusing Lindblad of having abruptly slowed down.
His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, immediately asked him to clarify the situation: “Repeat, Max.”
Verstappen then insisted on what he considered dangerous behavior: “He keeps braking in front of me all through the pit lane!”
Lambiase briefly concluded the exchange: “Copy, thank you.”
No incident noted by the stewards
Despite the anger expressed on the radio, the incident ultimately did not lead to an official investigation. The race stewards did not report the maneuver and no investigation was opened after the event.
Lindblad was thus able to continue his race without penalty and deliver a solid performance for his Formula 1 debut, finishing in eighth place. Verstappen, for his part, continued his comeback to cross the finish line in sixth position, just behind Lando Norris.
Even if the incident had no sporting consequence, this radio exchange illustrates the intensity of the battles in the field during this first round of the season.
