
Lewis Hamilton believes that the new F1 engine rules in 2026 are difficult to understand, both for fans and drivers, due to energy management becoming central.

The engine regulations introduced this season marked a major change in the recent history of Formula 1. Among the main changes is the removal of the MGU-H, the system that previously allowed recovery of energy from exhaust gases.
In its place, the FIA imposed a much more balanced distribution between thermal and electric power, with greatly increased electric assistance thanks to an MGU-K capable of delivering up to 350 kW.
Now, all energy recovery mainly relies on three elements: braking phases, moments when the driver lifts off the accelerator, and a new mode called “super clipping”.
This evolution has placed battery management at the heart of performance. Drivers must constantly balance between using their electric power immediately or conserving enough energy for strategic parts of the lap.
A totally different driving approach
According to Lewis Hamilton, this new philosophy profoundly changes the way a Formula 1 car is driven.
In a StarTalk video recorded during the Miami Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion explained that this complexity can be difficult to grasp.
“It’s really hard for fans to fully understand, and it’s also hard for us to understand, because the ultimate goal when you drive a Formula 1 car is to push it to the limit.”
For Hamilton, the problem is that taking more risks no longer necessarily guarantees an immediate performance gain.
“Normally, the faster you take a corner, the more time you should gain compared to others.”
But with the new rules, the situation is different.
“Today, since we have a limited amount of battery, we are constantly recharging it when we are off the throttle. Then, when we accelerate, we use that energy.”

The paradox of the new F1 cars
This constant management creates an unusual situation for drivers. Maximum attack in a fast corner can now have a negative consequence a few hundred meters later.
With the old regulations, the MGU-H allowed much more continuous energy recovery thanks to the turbo. This technology reduced the compromise between pure performance and battery management.
In 2026, every phase without acceleration becomes an opportunity to recover energy. Conversely, a more aggressive trajectory or full-speed passage through a fast corner can penalize the driver on the following straight.
“Taking more risks can be a penalty”
Asked about how the recharge system works, Hamilton acknowledged that the removal of the MGU-H had profoundly changed the balance.
“We have less charge this year because they removed the MGU-H we had last year, which is a bit confusing.”
The Briton then highlights a paradox that is hard to accept for drivers used to constantly seeking the limit.
“If you go flat out through a fast section, if you are more committed, take more risks and go faster in a corner, you are then penalized because you haven’t recharged enough.”
This new reality therefore represents a major cultural change for Formula 1. Drivers must no longer only be the fastest over a lap, but also the best energy managers.
As the new cars continue to evolve, the challenge will now be to find a balance between technological innovation, on-track spectacle, and understanding for spectators.
