Monaco GP: Ferrari could overturn Mercedes thanks to specific 'weapons'

The Monaco track could neutralize Mercedes’ advantage and put Ferrari back at the center of the fight for victory this weekend.

While Mercedes dominates the start of the 2026 F1 season, some observers believe that the Monaco Grand Prix could completely reshuffle the cards. According to a technical analysis, the unique characteristics of the Principality’s street circuit would favor Ferrari and could reduce the impact of the usual strengths on the grid.

Unlike modern circuits that are very fast and demanding on long straights, Monaco imposes a completely different pace. The many braking phases, tight corners, and very short sections greatly limit the importance of pure power and energy management on long accelerations.

This type of track forces drivers to maximize energy recovery under very specific conditions, while reducing the impact of lift-and-coast strategies. The result: the usual hierarchy could be disrupted, especially in areas where Mercedes has shone so far.

Fixed aerodynamics, a key factor

Another important element of the Monaco weekend: the removal of certain active aerodynamic solutions. Car setups will be strictly regulated, with fixed wing configurations, without the use of drag reduction systems during the race.

This regulatory constraint reduces adaptation possibilities during the race and places more emphasis on chassis quality and low-speed traction. Areas in which Ferrari seems more competitive than its direct rivals, notably Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull.

According to technical analyses, the SF-26 has qualities particularly suited to this type of circuit. Its corner exit behavior and acceleration responsiveness could become major assets in the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.

Recent upgrades have also improved the overall balance of the car, especially in traction phases and stability in slow corners, two crucial elements in Monaco.

The contrast between Leclerc and Hamilton

On the Ferrari side, perceptions are mixed. Lewis Hamilton seems to have found a better feel with the car during recent races, while Charles Leclerc has expressed a marked lack of confidence, especially after the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Monegasque driver reportedly suffered from a setup choice too dependent on the simulator, less effective in real conditions. However, Monaco offers a different opportunity: with three classic free practice sessions, teams will have more time to finely adjust their setups.

In this context, Ferrari could benefit from a favorable alignment of factors to directly compete with Mercedes. If the technical trends are confirmed, the Monaco Grand Prix could well be one of the first real opportunities to see the 2026 hierarchy seriously shaken up.
