As Formula 1 continues to debate a possible adjustment of engine rules for the upcoming seasons, Charles Leclerc highlighted what he considers one of the most delicate obstacles in the process: ensuring fairness among all competing teams.

For several months, the FIA and paddock stakeholders have been studying an evolution of the current regulations, marked by a 50/50 split between thermal engine and electric energy. A modification towards a 60/40 ratio in favor of electrification for 2027 has notably been mentioned, but discussions remain very divided.

A difficult regulatory balance to find

While some drivers, like Max Verstappen, have expressed their wish to see the current regulations evolve quickly, Leclerc calls for more caution in decision-making. For the Ferrari driver, the core of the problem lies in the difficulty of not disadvantaging certain teams already committed to a specific technical direction.

According to him, each manufacturer has developed its car and its power unit based on the rules established over several seasons, which makes any modification particularly sensitive.

The Monegasque does not question the idea of a change, which he even considers potentially beneficial for the spectacle and overall performance. However, he insists on the necessity to proceed methodically to avoid disrupting existing balances.

He believes that teams have invested enormous resources in understanding and developing the current regulations, which complicates any short-term reconsideration.

“We must be careful not to alter the balance of what has been built over the past years” he explained to several media outlets.

The challenge of consensus in the paddock

Beyond technical considerations, Leclerc also highlights the difficulty of reaching a common agreement among all stakeholders. Between manufacturers with divergent interests and different sporting objectives, finding a solution that satisfies everyone seems particularly complex.

The Ferrari driver acknowledges that discussions are moving in the right direction but remains cautious about their outcome.

“Finding something coherent and fair for everyone is much more complicated than expected” he added.

A decision still far from being made

While some teams support a rapid evolution of the regulations, others firmly oppose it, making any consensus difficult to achieve. In this context, the role of the FIA will be crucial to arbitrate between innovation and stability.

For Leclerc, the priority remains clear: improve the discipline without compromising the sporting fairness that defines its essence.
