An unexpected scientific discovery has paid tribute to Oscar Piastri in a rather original way. A species of fossilized wasp dating from the mid-Cretaceous has been named in reference to the McLaren driver, in recognition of his Formula 1 performances and the orange hue of the amber in which it was found.

The fossil, found in the Hukawng Valley region of Myanmar, was preserved in amber about 100 million years old. This microscopic species, measuring just over one millimeter, belongs to a period long before the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Researchers highlighted the exceptional nature of this preservation, which allows precise observation of an insect that lived in the heart of the Cretaceous. This discovery is part of a series of major finds made in this area, known for its particularly rich amber deposits.

A scientific tribute inspired by F1

The species was named Gwesped piastrii, a choice directly linked to the Australian driver. The scientists involved explained they wanted to honor his Formula 1 performances, while noting a visual coincidence: the color of the amber strongly reminiscent of McLaren’s iconic orange.

This decision illustrates how popular culture and science can sometimes intersect, even in fields as distant as paleontology and motorsport.

The project was carried out by several specialists from recognized institutions, including the University of Oxford, a geology institute in China, and a Brazilian university. Their collaboration made it possible to identify and classify this ancient species, while giving it a name now associated with the F1 paddock.

An original recognition for Piastri

Although Oscar Piastri has not yet publicly responded to this unusual distinction, this recognition adds to an already remarkable season for the McLaren driver. Between on-track performances and an unexpected scientific tribute, his name is now also part of history… prehistory.
