Lando Norris had an extremely difficult race in Montreal. From the start, McLaren made a bold choice by fitting intermediate tires on Norris’s and his teammate’s cars, Oscar Piastri.
But this strategy quickly proved to be a mistake. The track conditions were not suitable for intermediates and both McLarens quickly lost ground to competitors on slick tires.
Forced to pit prematurely to change tires, Norris and Piastri found themselves trapped in the middle of the pack, far from the battle for the podium.
Norris limits the damage before the drama
Despite this difficult start, Norris managed to gradually climb up the order thanks to a solid pace and several aggressive overtakes. Approaching lap 40, the Briton was in eighth position and still seemed capable of achieving a decent result.
But his comeback abruptly ended when a major mechanical problem struck his McLaren. A loud bang was heard before the driver immediately slowed down.
Norris eventually stopped his car in a runoff area, forced to retire after a failure deemed irreversible.

Another disappointment for McLaren
This retirement concludes a particularly difficult day for McLaren, already weakened by their strategic choices at the start of the race. While the team hoped to play a leading role in Montreal after solid qualifying, the final result is far from expectations.
The British outfit also joins the long list of teams affected by mechanical problems in particularly demanding conditions throughout the Canadian weekend.
A few moments after Norris’s retirement, Sergio Pérez was also forced to retire following a spectacular suspension failure as he was returning to the pits.
A championship that gets complicated
For Norris, this new retirement could be costly in the championship fight against Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, and Max Verstappen. In a season where gaps remain extremely tight, losing big points due to a mechanical failure is a hard blow.
McLaren will now have to quickly understand the exact cause of the problem to avoid another disappointment in the upcoming F1 calendar rounds.
